The Importance of Comfort
and Safety in the Workplace
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) account for 1/3 of all
occupational injuries and illnesses.
MSD’s account for $1 of every $3 spent on workers’
compensation
Employers pay $15-20 BILLION in workers’
compensation for MSD’s every year – indirect costs are
$45-54 Billion annually
Average workers’ compensation for a MSD claim costs
$8,000+
3M B&CSD MEA Workshop
Hidden Costs of MSD’s
More Than Just Pain or Discomfort
Reduced productivity
Increased chances of mistakes
Increased absenteeism
Decreased quality of life

What is it & how do mats help?
3M B&CSD MEA Workshop
The Problem
Discomfort is Caused by Working on Hard Surfaces
A common back hazard is standing/sitting in a constant
position causing stiffness and strain.
“Your Aching Back: A Look at Back Strain in The Workplace,” Job Safety & Health Quarterly/Fall
1990, page 26)
Poor blood circulation, as result of standing on hard
surfaces, can cause swollen and sore feet and legs.
(August Krogh Laboratory; Copenhagen, DK)
Standing stationary for long periods is a source of
discomfort in the legs and lower back.
(OSHA DRAFT Ergonomic Standard, Addendum B-5, Part III, Paragraph A)

The Solution
Fatigue-Resistant Matting
People working while standing on anti-fatigue matting
are significantly less likely to experience fatigue than those standing
on a concrete floor.
(Donald Ridley, Head, Human Resource Development Centre, Department of
Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield Campus, Hatfield Herts, England)
Electromyographic studies have demonstrated that subjects, when
standing on anti-fatigue matting, displayed a reduced amount of
localized muscular fatigue.
(“Evaluation of Anti-Fatigue Matting: Self Reports, Sustained Attention, and Electromyography
Measurements,”
HRDC, Department of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield Campus, Hatfield Herts, England)
Blood circulation is improved when using anti-fatigue matting.

Why Work Area Matting
Fatigue-resistant mats
are proven to reduce
fatigue and discomfort
by as much as 50
percent.*

NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) document on
general workstation design principles suggests using cushioned floor mats or
padded surfaces for prolonged standing.
(“Elements of Ergonomic Programs, A Primer Based on Workplace Evaluations of Musculoskeletal Disorders”,
Toolbox, Tray 9: Proactive Ergonomics, NIOSH, August 1998)
The OSHA Ergonomic Standard that was published and repealed identified
prolonged standing as a risk factor and that fatigue-resistant matting was a
control method for this risk factor.
(OSHA Ergonomic Standard published 14 November 2000, Federal Register, #:65:68261-688870)
Federal OSHA and State OSHA programs have and can still cite, under the
General Duty Clause, jobs with prolonged standing, with the recommended
abatement method of fatigue-resistant matting.

Fatigue-Resistant Facts
from Research Studies
Mats can make a difference.
Benefits of fatigue-resistant mats are measurable in as little as
3 hours of workstation use.
There are differences in the physical properties of mats.
There is a correlation between mat properties and physical back
and leg discomfort.
Walking generates more impact body forces than standing.
There is a body of literature on the negative effects of impact
with respect to long term joint disorders.

Standing versus Walking
Walking requires fatigue-
resistant mats that greatly
dampen foot impact, yet
return energy.
Standing requires fatigue-
resistant mats that provide
stability.

Use fatigue-resistant matting in areas where
workers are standing or walking. The matting is
intended to reduce muscle discomfort and body
aches due to fatigue.

Considerations
Are liquids present?
Is there debris present?
How do you want to clean the matting?
Liquids mopped up,
debris stays on top
Liquids flow through,
small debris falls through
3M B&CSD MEA Workshop
Picking the Right Fatigue-Resistant Mat
It depends on your ENVIRONMENT
Wet area or dry area?
If a wet area - what chemicals are present?
Debris present or not?
Do you want to keep it on top of the mat?
If there is debris, how big is it?
How do you plan to clean the mat?
