AMRITA SHER-GILL Amrita Sher-Gil was a Hungarian-Indian painter. She has been called "one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century" and a "pioneer" in modern Indian art. Drawn to painting from an early age, Sher-Gil started getting formal lessons in the art, at the age of eight. She first gained recognition at the age of 19, for her oil painting titled Young Girls. Sher-Gil traveled throughout her life to various countries including Turkey, France, and India, deriving heavily from precolonial Indian art styles and its current culture. Sher-Gil is considered an important painter of 20th-century India, whose legacy stands on a level with that of the pioneers from the Bengal Renaissance. She was also an avid reader and a pianist. Sher-Gil's paintings are among the most expensive by Indian women painters today, although few acknowledged her work when she was alive. 3

Their faces are expressionless. The painting employs a rich, colorful palette. Tones have been skillfully used. RAJA RAVI VARMA Raja Ravi Varma  (29 April 1848 – 2 October 1906 was an Indian painter and artist. His works are one of the best examples of the fusion of European  academic art  with a purely Indian sensibility and iconography. Especially, he was notable for making affordable  lithographs  of his paintings available to the public, which greatly enhanced his reach and influence as a painter and public figure. His lithographs increased the involvement of common people with fine arts and defined artistic tastes among the common people. Furthermore, his religious depictions of Hindu deities and works from  Indian epic poetry  and  Puranas  have received profound acclaim. He was part of the royal family of erstwhile  Parappanad ,  Malappuram district . Raja Ravi Varma was closely related to the royal family of  Travancore  of present-day  Kerala  state in India. Later in his life, two of his granddaughters were adopted into the royal family, and their descendants comprise the present royal family of Travancore, including the latest three Maharajas ( Balarama Varma III ,  Marthanda Varma III  and  Rama Varma VII ). 6

ARTWORKS OF RAJA RAVI VARMA 7 WOMAN HOLDING A FRUIT 'Woman Holding a Fruit'  shows Ravi Varma's mastery over the idioms of a new visual language in India . In the naturalistic depiction of the young woman, Ravi Varma lyrically combines eroticism with innocence. His handling of colours – mostly soft pinks and browns – heightens the tenderness evoked in this painting . Ravi Varma  depicts  Shakuntala , an important character of  Mahabharata , pretending to remove a thorn from her foot, while actually looking for her husband/lover,  Dushyantha , while her friends tease her and call her bluff .

[4]  He was raised in an average middle-class, art loving household which ultimately influenced his future decisions. When he was sixteen he was sent to study at the  Government College of Art, Kolkata . Abanindranath Tagore , the founder of  Bengal school  was vice-principal at the institution. [6]  He was taught to paint in the prevailing academic tradition drawing Classical nudes and painting in oils and in 1908 he received his Diploma in Fine Art. However, the principal E.B. Havell's influence, and Rabindranath Tagore's decisive lecture brought him to a realization that he needed to draw inspiration, not from Western traditions, but from his own culture, and so he looked to the living folk and tribal art for inspiration. [7]  He was most influenced by the  Kalighat Pat  ( Kalighat painting ), which was a style of art with bold sweeping brush-strokes. He moved away from his earlier impressionist landscapes and portraits and between 1921 and 1924 began his first period of experimentation with the Santhal dance as his starting point. Jamini Roy had 4 sons and 1 daughter . 9

ARTWORKS OF JAMINI ROY 10 GOPINI In ‘Gopini’ we see a monumentality of the figure.
