Respiratory Protection Clearing the Air Corporate Occupational Health

Airborne hazards encountered in the workplace Types of respiratory protection How to properly put on, adjust, and take off your respirator Limitations associated with respirators How to maintain, inspect, clean and store your respiratory equipment What to do in an emergency Recognize medical symptoms Effect of facial hair on your respirator seal Course Objectives 2 7/7/2022

Types of Respirators 3 7/7/2022

Types of Respirators (continued) 4 7/7/2022

Particulates “dust” Pigment - Titanium dioxide Extenders – Crystalline silica Welding fume – Nickel, iron, etc. Vapors and Gases Volatile compounds – Toluene, xylene, acetone, etc. Aldehydes – Formaldehyde Ammonia Common Airborne Hazards 5 7/7/2022

Health Effects 6 7/7/2022 Central nervous system impairment Respiratory irritation Cancer Organ disease (e.g. liver, kidney, lung) Respiratory sensitization Asthma

Donning an Elastomeric Respirator 7 7/7/2022

Elastomeric Respirator Seal Check Negative User Seal Check Positive User Seal Check 7/7/2022 8

Elastomeric Cartridge Change-Out Respirator Cartridges – limited use life Particulate Filter Cartridges – use until damaged or breathing resistance increases Chemical cartridges – only use for the time calculated by the EHS management team 7/7/2022 9

Elastomeric Cartridge Change-Out 7/7/2022 10 Never rely on odor to decide when to change your chemical cartridge Chemical odors in your respirator indicates breakthrough *Breakthrough when chemical passes through filter to you Stop working Notify supervisor Go to an area with clean air Change the cartridge

Donning Disposable Facepiece 11 7/7/2022

Strap Placement 12 7/7/2022 Correct Incorrect

Supplied Air 13 7/7/2022 Must meet or exceed Grade D requirements Breathing air Must be used with supplied air system, in the event of power loss or equipment malfunction. Escape bottle Shall be used for all compressor-supplied system Breathing air filtration Perform pre-use verification for all RPE and systems BEFORE USE

Airline Supplied Respiratory System 14 7/7/2022 Perform field check before every use Line check for all breathing equipment: from the entry point to the supply source Ensure tight connections Modification of supplied air respiratory protection connections is extremely dangerous and prohibited !

Air-purifying respirators do not provide oxygen Particulate filters do not filter chemical filters Chemical vapors do not filter particulate Chemical filters have a limited use life Respirator components cannot not be swapped between manufacturers Misuse of respirators may lead to sickness and death Respirator Uses, Limitations, & Guidelines 15 7/7/2022

Respirator Maintenance 16 7/7/2022 Keep the respirator protected while not in use. Place in tight container or bag away from manufacturing area Prior to each use inspect your respirator. Look for damage, deformities, or missing parts. If damage is discovered do not use and replace immediately After use clean the respirator in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation STORE INSPECT CLEAN

Emergency Situations 17 7/7/2022 Leave the area immediately Do not attempt to fix it in the contaminated or regulated area Notify your supervisor Replace with new equipment

Medical Considerations 18 7/7/2022 Burden on your respiratory system Medical clearance from a licensed healthcare provider Medical clearance to be repeated at least every 3 years Your supervisor will set up your medical clearance appointment before issuing a respirator

A clean shave is MANDATORY when using a respirator Respirators & Facial Hair 19 7/7/2022
