Assessment of Medication Adherence Among Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Cross-Sectional Survey

ABBREVIATIONS RA : Rheumatoid Arthritis DMARDs : Disease-Modifying Anti rheumatic Drugs GMAS : General Medication Adherence Scale

SUMMARY This study aims to assess medication adherence among adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS), Urdu version . It will quantify adherence to DMARDs, identify barriers (financial and behavioral), and evaluate the impact of non-adherence on disease outcomes. Insights will guide interventions to improve adherence and reduce disease burden. Abstract The research evaluates medication adherence in RA patients using GMAS, pill counts, and prescription refill records. The cross-sectional study will identify challenges, measure adherence levels, and provide actionable insights to improve outcomes.

Ethical Considerations Ethical approval will be obtained from the institutional review board. Informed consent will ensure participants understand the purpose and benefits of the study. Confidentiality will be maintained, and participants can withdraw at any time without affecting their treatment. The study adheres to ethical research guidelines.

INTRODUCTION Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that requires consistent adherence to DMARDs to manage symptoms and prevent progression. Non-adherence leads to poor disease outcomes, emphasizing the need to assess and address adherence patterns.

RATIONALE Adherence to RA medication is critical for controlling disease activity and preventing long-term complications. This research addresses gaps in understanding barriers and adherence patterns, aiming to improve patient care through localized data.

LITERATURE REVIEW Studies highlight that financial and behavioral challenges significantly affect adherence to RA medications. Existing research lacks localized data, particularly using validated tools like the Urdu version of GMAS, to assess adherence among Pakistani populations.

OBJECTIVE Quantify adherence to DMARDs in RA patients. Identify financial, behavioral, and other barriers to adherence. Assess the impact of non-adherence on disease outcomes. Provide insights for data-driven interventions to enhance adherence.

METHODS Study Design Cross-Sectional Survey Study Setting Sehat Medical Complex, Lake City, Hanjarwal Study Duration TBD Study Technique Convenient Sampling Sample Size To be calculated Data Collection Tool Urdu GMAS, Pill Count, Prescription Refill Records Inclusion Criteria Adults aged 18–65 with RA. On DMARDs for at least three months. Can provide informed consent. Exclusion Criteria Cognitive impairments affecting medication understanding. Severe psychiatric or other comorbid conditions impacting adherence.

DATA Analysis Descriptive Statistics : To quantify adherence levels. Regression Analysis : To explore barriers and their relationship with adherence. Results will inform targeted interventions for improved adherence and disease management.

Expected Results Based on previous literature, we anticipate the following outcomes: Moderate to low adherence rates among RA patients due to financial and behavioral barriers. Urdu GMAS will provide a reliable measurement of adherence levels in the Pakistani population. Identification of key factors influencing adherence, enabling targeted interventions. Recommendations for improving adherence through patient education and policy changes.
