About This Presentation

The Voyer Cinema is a Pop-up Cinema that is funded by mayor film distributor such as Curzon Artificial Eye. The idea behind the cinema is that it can be built and adapt to any building and can also be located outdoors. The design scheme was heavily influenced by the concept of “pixels, falseness ...

Client & Site Research The culture of watching lms & the entertainment industry Project Introduction The culture of watching lms & why we watch lms
We watch movies because they can make us experience moments
that are outside our everyday life. We watch movies because they
matter because they let us relate to other people, they let us suspense
our disbelieve, inspire us, scare us, make us laugh, cry, dream, and
question things, but the most importantly, make us empathies.
Movies gives us the opportunity to look at human beings with all of
their aws and still accept them.
?No form of art goes beyond ordinary consciousness as lm does,
straight to our emotions, and deep into the twilight room of the
soul.? - Ingmar Bergman
However if cinema is such a powerful medium, then it is important
for us to understand and watch lms more critically, and be an active
recipient of it, so that we can get the most out of it. Because when
we understand the nuances of a medium, we enjoy the most subtle
moments within that medium.
Watching movies critically and thoughtfully gives us better insights
to deal with our social anxieties, broken heart, and it helps us connect
with each other. The future of cinema & the entertainment industry
Consumers are indeed looking for new experiences. The
entertainment sector in particular has seen signicant growth in the
past ve years due to artists placing greater emphasis on performing
live over recording.
The cinema industry beneted from over ?1.1 billion in spending on
tickets in 2015, 15 per cent more than in 2014. Recent blockbusters
include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the biggest lm of all time
with non-ination adjusted UK box ofce sales of nearly ?123 million,
and other big successes such as Spectre and Jurassic World.
Such lms highlight the industry?s reliance on high quality, attention
grabbing productions that draw consumers out of their homes.
These characteristics are also critical to the future of the cinema
industry given increasing competition from online streaming. 01

Client & Site Research Project Introduction Design Concept & Idea For this project I will be designing a cinema hugely based on the
idea and concept of ?falseness and voyeurism? in which I believe
would engage users distinctively from other cinemas and other
entertainment services that exist to this day I found the inspiration
by taking a trip to The Barbican and The National Theatre in which
there are huge foyers which promotes the Idea of watching others
without them knowing as seen on the images on the right. Therefore
within the space there will be bespoke design elements relating to
the concept.
Within the space I want engage the audience more into the lm that
they are watching and making the experience more intimate via the
environment and design within the space, Using architecture as a
key and the choice of venue in which lays the foundations for the
entire production design.
I want to create a space where it serves a social cause within society,
and to escape from the reality of work and by this is to create an
informal space and to entertain the audience via lms. 01

Client & Site Research Project Introduction Client & Target Market Film Distributors Pop-up malls/retailers Arts Council 01 For this project my client would be Curzon Articial Eye, which is a British lm distributor, specialising in
independent, foreign-language and art house lms for cinema and home entertainment.
Curzon Cinemas rst opened their doors to cinema-goers in 1934 at Mayfair and now has 13 cinemas
nationwide. Not only that but they also launched its Curzon Home Cinema service in 2010, making lms
available to watch at home on the same day as their cinema release.
Creating a sense of going out rather than staying indoors, promoting a social gathering of people who are
interested in lms and the creators that are starting of in the creative industry. Such as Curzon Articial Eye, which is a British lm distributor, specialising in independent, foreign-
language and art house lms for cinema and home entertainment.
Curzon Cinemas rst opened their doors to cinema-goers in 1934 at Mayfair and now has 13 cinemas
nationwide. Not only that but they also launched its Curzon Home Cinema service in 2010, making lms
available to watch at home on the same day as their cinema release. Described as the ??world rst pop up mall?? what makes Box Park unique is the fact that the companies idea
is to ret shipping containers using them as shopping centres for independence and global, fashion and
lifestyle stores, which evolved into street food, bars and events. Arts Council England, is a goverment-funded body dedicated to promoting performing, visual and literary
arts in England. This investment has helped transform the building stock of arts organisation and to create
lots of additional high quality arts activity.

Client & Site Research Site Analysis Site History & Site analysis 01 Site History
The building used to be an old railway viaduct now the village
underground is a multi-purpose event space, which host everything
from concert and club nights to exhibition, theatre, live arts and other
performances retaining Victorian features and authentic aspect,
including railway inuences, vaulted bricked arches. Site Analysis
Below are some photographs which I’ve took when we visited the
site, showing the highlight of the current area, as you can see that
there are many grafti and arts about in different levels. There are a
strong contrast of old and new besides each other.
Figure 1 - You can see that there are old tube carriages that are
placed on top of the village underground which are also easily seen
from both street below, Hollywell Lane and Great Eastern Street.
Figure 2 - Earth also It is formally known as Hackney Art Centre, EartH
stands for Evolution Arts Hackney and it is a multi-arts space for the
21st Century.
Figure 3 - You can see both Great Eastern Street & Hollywell Lane, not
only that but once you visit the two street, you can tell the different
between noise, how busy is from one to another.

Client & Site Research Site Analysis Village Underground EC2A 3PQ 01 The site is located in London Borough of Hackney, centrally in the
heart of Shoreditch. It is located in East London, between Hollywell
Lane & Great Eastern Street. Shoreditch is well known for being the
creative centre of London, therefore it would be a great place to
start a cinema that focuses on bringing creative lm makers to the
location. Existing Conditions

The series of images show the wide range of qualities that shift as
you walk throughout the interior. The light qualities shifts as you walk
through the arched area and make your way through the tripled
height space where the skylight oods the room with lighting.
The space is busy with bricks and the material is rich in texture that
creates a natural back drop for a design that is imposed in the space. Existing Conditions

concerts, theatre productions, and art galleries etc. Existing site Plan & Section Entrance from Hollywell Lane Existing Toilets which will be removed & transform into a larger cafe area. Entrance from Great Eastern Street Roof Height 6.30metre 10.00metre which is enough to place three oors

Client & Site Research Site Analysis & Development Iteration Models & Layout 01 For development I’ve decided to play about with positioning and
layout to help understanding the key parts of the design, also to help
maximising the space. Focusing on how much space to t in cinema,
pods and locating where the retail and cafe area should be. Both arches have a
height of 5.50 metres
making it possible to

making it possible to
add in a third oor. Close up photograph of model

Concept & Design Development Design Exemplar // Contemporary Cinemas 02 Strong single point of sale :
The conventional concept of the ticket window is eliminated, getting
rid of the volume destined to this function, located in shopping
centre’ restoration terrace. At the main bar, the public can now buy
tickets as well as popcorn, drinks and others, making a single queue.Information :
Given the original disorder and randomness, it is decided to order
the digital information in two axes. The first one, frontal from the
access and parallel to the bar, will announce the schedules of films,
drinks and other consumables. in a perpendicular direction, and
by screening the original pillars, there will be a billboard with all
the films and trailers. The architecture will change according to the
information, energising the space. Illumination :
The experience of entering the cinemas is, amongst other things, the
change from light to darkness. At a height of 270 cm, a sub-structure
is created to support all the arranged lighting in continuous strips
that, with their zig-zag, guide the spectator from the doors to the
entrance of the rooms. Therefore, the hall becomes the first gradient
of darkness. Filmax Cinema Hall / Arquitecturia + AMOO
Architect : AMOO, Arquitecturia
Location : Barcelona, Spain ?

CCTV (live video) :
At the entry, a glass surrogate straddles the stone wall; a live video
camera outside and a plasma monitor inside provide an electronic
transparency to the street.
The design emphasizes the social aspects of dining. Entrance from
the street is transformed into the ritual of “making an entrance”.
Initially, a sensor in the revolving entry door triggers a video snapshot
that is added to a continuously changing display on over the bar,
announcing every new patron.
Along the “video beam” composed of 15 side by side LCD monitors,
the most recent portrait takes the first position and racks the previous
15 to the right, dropping away the oldest. 02 The Brasserie / Diller + Scofidio

Sizes of bubble determines how busy the space is 02 09.00 to 17.00
Between opening time and 16.00 the cafe area would be the most occupied area, there will be people
passing by on their way somewhere else, and perhaps coming into the cinema just to grab a coffee. The
mini pods are available from 9.00 as it can also be privately hired, and the retail space would be open for
people who wish to shop. 10.00 to 13.00
The cafe opens at 10.00 in the morning and retail space open around 11.00 & 12.00 on a Sunday especially.
However the mini pods can be hired for a period of time starting at 10.00. 17.00 to 20.00
During this time the cinema rooms & the mini pods would be starting to get busy as well as the cafe. The
retail space closes at 17.30. 20.00 to 02.00
Starting from 20.00 the cinema rooms would be lled as well as the mini pods. Since the cafe also sells
alcoholic beverages it will be closing later than usual on a weekend. 17.00 to 18.00
Around this time, most people would be nishing work around shoreditch and they might be heading to the
cafe for a drink or so, socialise with their friends and some maybe would be watching a lm later and would
chill at the cafe for a bit. There will be shows starting from 12.00 and onwards. 18.00 to 22.30
During this time, the cafe would be busy with people ordering food & drinks and waiting in the area until
their show starts. The retail space would close at 19.30 and the cafe and during the weekdays the cafe
would be closing at 21.30. The last lm would be showing at 22.00 and doors will close at 22.30

My initial thought would be to design the space where
there would be three key element, an open space,
where the public can walk around freely, a semi open
where the cafe & retail will be that would serve the
customers, and a close space, where the cinema &
hired cinema pods would be located. Horizontal & Vertical

Concept & Design Development Concept Development Material Experimentation 02 Transparency Form/Layers Corrugated Card
This particular card is stretched and the further you stretch it the more revealing it is from the other side, creating this form of transparency. The
corrugated card is strong when is closed, however it becomes weaker once it is fully stretched out, making it very venerable. Applying this to the
design would create an illusion, making it interesting to voyeur. Clear Acrylic & Metal Mesh
Layering the materials to create an effect of transparency, the more layers there are, the less reveiling it is from the other side. This also embodies
chracacteristics of the contrasting materials. The clear acrylic creates a neutral backdrop for the metal mesh. Corrugated Card (Hexagon)
The shape of the card are hexagon, and it doesn?t stretches out like the one before. This one I was experimenting with positioning it in different
angels, and you look straight into the material, you?ll see through quite clearly, however as tilt it or move slightly away from it, you?ll start to see the
person from the other side disappearing. Applying this to the design, would create of distortion. Mirror & Glass
Using mirror within the interior would create and illusion, allowing you to voyeur the other person without them noticing so easily, this is the drive
to my concept, I decided to rather than using mirrors to reect others, is to use digital screen monitors which would record the person. Position/Distortion Reection

The stairs stand out,
however it is in the
way of the pathway
in which connects
the two streets. First oor is tight,
not much room for
a smooth ow of
movement. Large open space,
the rst oor
contains two small

can hold up to six

large cinema which
can hold up to 16

this layout is the
sense of open
space, making
it easy to ow

without feeling too
claustrophobic,
ideally this layout
works better than
the others as a
cinema space. Looking at best

As you?ll see here, as the design assembled together
you?ll also see that more people starts to come, which
would create an area from dead to buzzing with
people, hopefully bringing life to the area.
