Problem Statement With the intensive development of agriculture, the productive of crops has increased and use of pesticides and fertilizers also increased that poses many environmental and health problems. Toxic resides of agriculture chemicals are entering the human diet are major concern today. In this project we propose the approaches that helps to avoid pesticides from fruits and vegetables .
Introduction Most of the fruits and vegetables that you eat are loaded with chemicals and pesticides. These are primarily used by the farmers during the cultivation to save the fruits and vegetables from pests and harmful insects However, the residue pesticides and chemicals stay on the surface of the fruits & Vegetables
Here’s a list of the 10 most contaminated food items: Strawberries Spinach Nectarines Apples Grapes Peaches Cherries Pears Tomatoes Celery The Most Contaminated Food Items
Problems identified that effect human health Fruit/vegetable Chemical used Effect on humans Strawberries Carbendazim damages the male reproductive system Spinach Permethrin risks to children’s brain development Apples Diphenylamine induce cancer Peaches Fludioxonil Disrupts neurological system
Fruit/vegetable Chemical used Effect on humans Pears Pyrimethanil and o-Phenyl phenol reproductive toxin Cherries Bifenthrin and Myclobutanil risks to children’s brain development Grapes Imidacloprid hormone disruptor. Tomatoes Edosulfan II, hormone disruptor Problems identified that effect human health
Remedies Method Description Washing About 75-80% of pesticide reduces are removed by cold water washing(two or three washes) Blanching A short treatment in hot water or steam applied to most of the vegetables. Certain pesticide residues can effectively be removed by blanching(pre wash is required)
Method Description Peeling Both systemic and contact pesticides that appear on the surface of the fruits and vegetables can be removed by peeling. Vinegar Soak with 10 percent white vinegar and 90 percent water and soak your veggies and fruits in them. Stir them around and rinse thoroughly Remedies
Product bases approaches
Detecting of chemicals To test for pesticides, users simply pass a swab over the fruit or vegetable, insert the swab into the detector and wait about 30 seconds. A green light on the face of the device means the pesticide residue is under the EPA tolerance; a red light means the opposite. The detector requires one swab per chemical and can identify up to 24 chemicals. That ought to be enough to cover the most widespread and problematic pesticides.
Conclusion Pesticides are used to protect the crops from insects, germs and rodents when the plants are growing up. Residual amount of these chemicals are present on the fruits and vegetables when it gets to the grocery store.. When we consume a fruit the pesticide residue goes into the body as they get stuck and can make us sick. So to reduce the residues we suggested home remedies and device that detects the chemicals on fruits/vegetables. Experts recommend people to eat organic foods as they are good for health.
FUTURE WORK In future we develop an intelligent device to defect pesticides even minute resides on fruits and vegetables using deep learning.
