Retaining Wall 10
1. PCC for Retaining Wall Before placing the reinforcement for retaining wall it is necessary to have a levelled surface. But if the surface has undulations, the surface is to be levelled by placing PCC (Plain Cement Concrete). The grade of concrete used was M10. 11 Fig-1.1: Process of laying PCC
2. Raft-Footing for Retaining Wall First we place the bottom bars as per its spacing. And then before placing the top bars we need to provide the vertical spacing between the top and bottom bars. That vertical spacing is provided using ‘chair bars’. After placing the chair bars in required order we will place the top bars and fix them. At last we provide shuttering and then fill it with concrete. 12 Fig-2.1: Bottom Reinforcement Fig-2.2 : Chair Bars Fig-2.3 : Placed Chair Bars Fig-2.4: Complete Reinforcement of Raft
3. Reinforcement for Stem of Retaining Wall 13 The main reinforcement and the distribution bars are placed as per the design given to the engineers. As the load is maximum at the bottom of stem portion, the reinforcement is more when compared at top as shown in figure. Fig: Reinforcement for Stem Portion
14 4. Farm Work for Retaining Wall After providing the reinforcement it’s time to place the concrete. But before placing the concrete we must provide the farm work so that the concrete gets the required shape as shown in fig-4.1. The farm work was connected with the help of ‘ tie rods ’. The farm work is as shown in figure-4.2. Fig-4.1 : Farm Work for Stem Portion of Retaining Wall Fig-4.2: Connection of Farm Work with the help of Tie Bars
5. Curing of Retaining Wall 15 Fig-5.1: Curing by placing the gunny bags After the concrete gets harden, the formwork is removed and further the concrete needs to be cured. Here the curing process is carried out by placing gunny bas as shown in the Fig-5.1 .
6. Estimation The estimation is carried out for every 10m length of retaining wall as shown in below table. Particulars Qty Length Width Height Total Qty Concrete in Stem Portion 1 10m 0.25m 3.2m 08m³ Farm Work for Stem Portion 2 10.25m - 3.2m 65.6m² Concrete in Raft Footing 1 10m 1m 0.6m 06m³ Farm Work for Raft Footing 2 11m - 0.6m 13.2m² 16

Internship Outcomes I got to know how a group of employees work together to run a company. This internship program built a bridge across the theoretical knowledge what we study in academics and the practical knowledge what we carryout in the actual field. During my four weeks of internship, I learnt how to deal with the clients and communicate with other employees. Also we learn how to handle the labours, which is the main thing to know as a site engineer. As an intern in the company, I learnt quantity estimation, bar bending schedule (BBS) and managing the work according to time. 21
Problems Faced Sometimes the work would get delayed if the concrete doesn’t come on time from RMC plant. The detailed drawings wasn’t getting finalized i.e., the design and detailing were always changing which delays the day to day works. We need to deal with the neighbouring residences so that they wont create disturbances in the construction. 22 Thank You
