Slide Content

Fire Detection & Alarm System Presented by: S. M. Murshidur Rahman Officer (FW & LF) BMTF Limited, Gazipur.

Fire Safety Preventive Measures Protective Measures (adopted to detect and warn fire forecast) (adopted to extinguish fire and minimize damage) Fire Detection System (FDS) Fire Alarm System (FAS) Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) Automatic Manual (Activate themselves automatically) (Activated by Manual Call Point) Fire Safety Assurance System

FDAS Based on Technical Feature Addressable Conventional ( Microprocessor based intelligent system. Control panel communicates with each addressable device individually.) ( Usually not based on Microprocessor. Panel can only identify if any detector triggers in a zone. ) Types of FDAS

Different Types of FDS Devices Optical or Ionization Smoke Detector Multi Sensor Detector Heat Detector Reflective Beam Smoke Detector Air Sampling Smoke Detector UV/IR Flame Detector Spark/Ember Detector Duct Smoke Detector Gas Leakage Detector Video Image Smoke Detector

Occupancy Every building or portion there of shall be classified according to its use or character of occupancy . A brief description of such occupancy groups is discussed at BNBC 2020 (Part-III, Chapter-I, Page: 2629-2631). Table 3.1.1: Summary of Occupancy Classification ( BNBC 2020: Part-III, Chapter-I, Page: 2629-2631 ) Occupancy Type Subdivision Nature of Use or Occupancy Fire Index A: Residential A1 Single family dwelling 1 A2 Two families dwelling 1 A3 Flats or apartments 1 A4 Mess, boarding houses, dormitories and hostels 1 A5 Hotels and lodging houses 1 B: Educational Facilities B1 Educational facilities up to higher secondary levels 1 B2 Facilities for training and above higher secondary education 1 B3 Pre-school facilities 1 D: Healthcare Facilities D1 Normal medical facilities 2 D2 Emergency medical facilities 2 H: Storage Buildings H1 Low fire risk storage 3 H2 Moderate fire risk storage 3 J: Hazardous Building J1 Explosion hazard building 4 J2 Chemical hazard building 4 J3 Biological hazard building 4 J4 Radiation hazard building 4

Building Classification Table 3.1.2: Summary of Classification of Buildings Based on Types of Construction BNBC 2020: Part-III, Chapter-I, Page: 2631 Construction Group Construction Type Description Group I: Non-combustible Type I-A 4 hour protected Type I-B 3 hour protected Type I-C 2 hour protected Type I-D 1 hour protected Type I-E Unprotected Group II: Combustible Type II-A Heavy timber Type II-B Protected wood joist Type II-C Unprotected wood joist Type II-D Protected wood frame Type II-E Unprotected wood frame

Integration of Fire Detection & Alarm System Interface between fire alarm system and fire fighting which means we can interface through monitor module which includes fire fighting devices (if provisions available) like flow switch, fire hose reel and fire pump/diesel pump status, Supervisory gate valve, zone control valves.

Integration of Fire Detection & Alarm System

Types of Integration Devices Input Unit Output Unit (used to connect non-addressable devices ) Integration Devices (used to control lift, cut off power etc.) Input/Output Unit (Used where both functions are required)

Diesel Engine Run Electric Pump Run Jockey Pump Run Electric Pump Reversal Electric Pump Motor Trouble Electric Pump Controller Trouble Pump Room Trouble Electric Pump Suction Riser Close PRV Water Flow Hydrant Riser Close Sprinkler Riser Close etc. Some Types of Input Modules

1. Fire Door Interfacing 2. Lift/ Elevator Interfacing 3. Exhaust Fan/ Basement Ventilation Fan Interfacing 4. PAVA System Interfacing 5. HVAC System Interfacing 6. Fire Curtain Interfacing 7. Fire Damper/ Smoke Damper Interfacing 8. Sprinkler System Interfacing 9. Fire Suppression System Interfacing etc. Some Types of Output Modules

Fire Detection and Alarm System Drawings

Fire Alarm System Inspection Procedure Step 1: Put the fire alarm system on test (if it is externally monitored) Step 2: Activate one of the fire alarm call points Step 3: Confirm operation of the alarm sounders and any other connected equipment such as magnetic door holders Step 4: Reset the call point Step 5: Reset the fire alarm panel Step 6: Take the fire alarm system off test (if monitored)

Code & Rules and Regulation Code & Rules and Regulation Followed : a. BNBC -2006 (Old Building ) b. BNBC -2020 ( Proposed /Newly constructed Building) c. Fire Act -2003 d. Fire Rules -2014 (Revised is on going) e. NFPA -72 (2019 Edition)
