About This Presentation

Fire extinguishers use and inspection

Slide Content

Fire Extinguisher Use and inspectionFire Extinguisher Use and inspection
•Understand the combustion process and different
fire classes
•Understand fire extinguisher types, operating
procedures
•Understand basic firefighting concepts
P.A.S.S : PULL – AIM – SQUEEZE - SWEEP

The Combustion Process
•Three components
•Need all three components to
start a fire
•Fire extinguishers remove one
or more of the components.

Fire Classes
•wood
•paper
•cloth
•etc.

•Recently recognized by NFPA 10
•Fires involving combustible oils,
lards and fats in commercial
cooking.

Fire Extinguisher Types
•Class “A” fires only
•2.5 gal. water
(up to 1 minute discharge time)
•Has pressure gauge to allow visual
capacity check
•30-40 ft. maximum effective range
•Can be started and stopped as
necessary
•Extinguishes by coolingcooling burning
material below the ignition point.
PRESSURIZED WATERPRESSURIZED WATER

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.)
•Class “B” or “C” fires
•2.5-100 lb. of CO
2 (8-30
seconds discharge time)
•Has NONO pressure gauge--capacity
verified by weight
•3-8 ft. maximum effective range
•Extinguishes by smotheringsmothering
burning materials
•Effectiveness decreasesdecreases as
temperature of burning material
increases.
CARBON DIOXIDE (COCARBON DIOXIDE (CO
22))

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.)
•Class “A”, “B”, or “C” fires
•2.5-20 lb. dry chemical
(ammonium phosphate)
8-25 seconds discharge time)
•Has pressure gauge to allow
visual capacity check
•5-20 ft. maximum effective
range
•Extinguishes by smotheringsmothering
burning materials.

Firefighting Decision Criteria
•Know department emergency procedures and evacuation routes
•Know locations of extinguishers in your area and how to use them
•Always sound the alarm regardless of fire size
•Avoid smoky conditions
•Ensure area is evacuated
•Don’t attempt to fight unless:
•Alarm is sounded
•Fire is small and contained
•You have safe egress route (can be reached without exposure to fire)
•Available extinguishers are rated for size and type of fire
•If in doubt, evacuate!
“DON’T ATTEMPT TO FIGHT UNLESS YOU ARE TRAINED”

Summary
•Combustion Process (Fire Triangle)
•Class A, B, C, D, K fires
•Types of portable fire extinguishers:
•Operating procedures

Inspection, maintenance and testing
1910.157(e)(1)
The employer shall be responsible for the inspection,
maintenance and testing of all portable fire extinguishers in the
workplace.
1910.157(e)(2)
Portable extinguishers or hose shall be visually inspected
monthly.

Monthly Inspection
1.Is the Fire Extinguisher in its designated place?
2.No obstruction to access or visibility?
3.Pressure gauge reading or indicator in operable range or
position?

Monthly Visual Inspection
Cylinder Shell
1.Corrosion
2.Mechanical Damage (dent abrasion)
3.Paint Condition
4.Presence of repairs (welds, soldering)
5.Damaged Threads
6.Broken Hanger attachment
7.Broken Handle Lug

Monthly Visual Inspection
Name Plate, Instructions and Pull Ring
1.legible Wording
2.Corrosion or loose plate
3.Verifying operating instructions on
nameplates are legible and face outward.
4.Broken, missing safety seals and tamper
indicators.

Monthly Visual Inspection
Nozzle or Horn
1.Deformed, Damaged or Cracked
2.Blocked opening
3.Damaged threads
4.Hose obstruction
5.Hydrostatic test date

Monthly Visual Inspection
Pressure Indicating Device
1.Immovable, jammed, missing pointer
2.Deformed, or broken crystal
3.Illegible or faded dial
4.Corrosion
5.Dented case or crystal retainer
6.Immovable or corroded pressure
indicating stem

Annual Maintenance Check
Annually
1.Utilize a 3
rd
party for Annual
maintenance check.
2.Ensure you have adequate
protection when fire
extinguishers are removed
for maintenance or
recharging.
Hydrostatic Testing
1.Testing must be performed
by someone with suitable
testing and equipment
facilities.
2.Retain certification record for
all testing.
