Extinguishments STOP THE CHAIN REACTION - recent studies indicate that the use of dry chemical on fire tends to inactivate the i nt e rm e d i a t e p r o c e ss e s o f b u r ni n g r e s u lti n g i n a r e d u cti o n of the combustion rate & in the extinguishment of fire.

Fire Extinguishers WATER EXTINGUISHERS - are effective for Class A fires. Water serves as cooling, quenching & displacing agent.

Fire Extinguishers FOAM EXTINGUISHERS - are effective for Class B fires where the foam forms a cohesive floating b l a n k e t o n t he s ur f a c e o f t he b u r n i n g li qu i d .

How long does a fire extinguisher discharge? How long does a fire extinguisher discharge? A 1 to 2 ½ lb extinguisher has a 5-8 foot horizontal stream range and will discharge for 8-12 seconds. A 2 ¾ to 5 lb extinguisher has a 5-20 foot horizontal stream range and will discharge for 8-20 seconds.

When is a fire extinguisher discarded from service? This extinguisher should be serviced at least annually, and discharged tested every 5 years to check the actual functioning to BS5306 Part 3 and Part 8 by a trained, competent person.

When does a fire extinguisher expire? Disposable fire extinguishers should be replaced every 12 years. Rechargeable fire extinguishers should be taken to an experienced fire equipment company and recharged every 10 years.

When is it time for fire extinguisher replacement? The maintenance and replacement of a fire extinguisher depends on the type of extinguisher. Wet chemical fire extinguishers should be tested every 5 years. Dry chemical fire extinguishers should be hydrostatically tested every 12 years, with general maintenance conducted every 6 years. If it’s been 10 years and you have a rechargeable fire extinguisher, it’s time to recharge!
