About This Presentation

As, fog directly hampers the visibility, it increases the risk of accident. Thus, trains are instructed to be slow for the cautionary purpose. Fog implies winter, indicating chances of spontaneous rail cracks posing threat to derailment. That's why cautionary slow trains.

EFFECT OF FOG ON TRAIN SCHEDULE

DEFINITION OF FOG Fog  is a complex atmospheric  phenomenon . It is a visible mass consisting of cloud  water  droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air at or near the Earth's surface. Fog can be considered a type of low-lying cloud , and is heavily influenced by nearby bodies of water,  topography , and wind conditions. In turn, fog has affected many human activities, such as shipping, travel, and warfare.

PICTURE OF FOG

Why Indian trains run late in fog? There is no communication between the locomotive and signal post or any other server which can give the status of upcoming signal. In other words, the loco pilot must see the signal with his eyes before proceeding. In case of poor visibility or foggy weather, the speed restriction on IR is 60 KMPH. One can't go beyond. TPWS (Train Protection and warning system) and other systems are under trial, which feature cab signaling so that the loco pilot need not see the signal outside. But it'll take time for all these to get implemented all over IR.

REASONS BEHIND FORMATION OF FOG IN INDIA Two different forms of fog in India generally form in the sub tropics. Advective fog Radiation fog North India – Dense fog in Delhi and North India (from December till the end of January) is the most common feature of the winter season which leads to massive delays and cancellations of flights and trains. The reason for fog in North India is entirely because of a weather system called Western Disturbance. A Western Disturbance affecting the hills of Jammu and Kashmir may sometimes lead to a sudden reversal of winds from the normal dry and cool northwesterly to humid easterlies or southeaster lies which could cause widespread fog in the plains of North India.

Status of Trains Affected Due to Fog

HOW WE MINIMISE DELAYS CAUSED BY FOG We’re investing in the European rail traffic management system which brings signaling inside the train cab, reducing drivers’ reliance on track-side signaling and reducing the need to slow down when visibility is poor. All trains are fitted with an automatic warning system which rings a bell when it’s approaching a green signal and sounds a horn when the signal is yellow or red.
