Food and beverage establishments
Full service/fine dining restaurants They serve a selection of food and beverages. They offer a formal menu and a wide variety of food. Mostly expensive. Example- Saskia’s Family restaurants They are informal, less expensive and appealing to tourists with a limited budget. Provides breakfasts, lunches and other beverages, coffee and cake. Example- Spur
Coffee shops Establishments offering informal meal service with limited menu. Example – Mugg & Bean Pubs/ bars Alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks are served here. Food that can be prepared and served quickly.
Fast food and quick service establishments Food is ordered as take- away. S ome have seating areas for people wanting to eat there. Example – KFC Dessert/ ice cream stores Outlets that sell frozen dairy products including soft serve, ice cream, frozen yoghurts and sorbets. Example- Milky Lane
Street stalls and street markets Colourful street stalls and markets specialising in specific types of fast food. Usually they reflect cultural or ethnic traditions. They do not have permanent structures.
The attraction sector and it’s sub- sectors
Gaming & lotteries Activities involving casino gambling, limited pay – out machines, sport betting, bingo and the National Lottery. Leisure Any activity that involves time spent away from business, work, domestic chores and education. For relaxation. Includes eating and sleeping.
Conservation Wildlife conservation activities involve tourists who love the wildlife and are passionate about the environment. Sport & recreation An activity of leisure and is often done for enjoyment , pleasure or fun. Participating in sports can be a recreational activity.
Events and Conferences Events = A planned public or social occasion for the purpose of celebration, education, marketing or reunion. Conference = Gathering of people with a common interest, with the purpose of meeting one another and to discuss issues, ideas and work that focus on a topic of mutual concern.
Types of tourist attractions Man- made Attractions that are made by man. Examples- Statue of Nelson Mandela and Cradle of Humankind. Natural Attractions that are part of nature – not created by man. Examples- God’s Window and Kruger National Park.
Primary & Secondary attractions Table mountain is the primary attraction (the attraction that the tourist is visiting.) While visiting the mountain, they can engage in activities such as mountain biking, cable car, mountain climbing etc. These are called secondary attractions.
