FOOD CHAIN AND FOOD WEB SUBMITTED BY : HARSIMRAN KAUR ROLL NO: 25
FOOD CHAIN It is a linear network of living organisms in a community through which energy is transferred in the form of food, It describes relationship of organisms about who eats whom.
TYPES OF FOOD CHAIN : On the basis of choice of habitat, food chains are of two types : 1) Terrestrial food chain 2) Aquatic food chain
Terrestrial Food Chain A terrestrial food chain is a depiction of energy flow within an ecosystem comprised of organisms that live on land . Grass ->Insects -> Snake -> Hawk
Aquatic Food Chain Aquatic food chain is the food chain which occurs in water . It consists of the phytoplankton which obtain the first trophic level, the zooplanktons obtain the second trophic level and the small fishes obtain the third trophic level Phytoplankton -> Zooplankton -> Fish -> Shark .
TRANSFER OF ENERGY According to ten per cent law only 10 per cent of the energy entering a particular trophic level of organisms is available for transfer to the next higher trophic level
FOOD WEB A food web consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem . ... Each food chain is one possible path that energy and nutrients may take as they move through the ecosystem. All of the interconnected and overlapping food chains in an ecosystem make up a food web
SIGNIFICANCE OF FOOD CHAIN : 1)Food chain helps in studying feeding relationships between organisms. 2) Food chain also helps us to know how much energy we gain by consuming which food. 3) Food chain helps us to know energy flow from one trophic level to another trophic level.
