Don’t be alarmed by its unflattering name. Growing blood lilies in the garden is a great way to add seasonal interest. Blood lily care is relatively basic and when given suitable accommodations, the plant will continue to reward you each year with its unique fuzzy-looking blooms

Scadoxus multiflorus  was originally  described   by English botanist  Thomas Martyn  in 1795 as  Haemanthus multiflorus .  Samuel Rafinesque  moved  Haemanthus multiflorus  to his new genus  Scadoxus  in 1838, giving it its current binomial name  Scadoxus multiflorus . History of football lily

Haemanthus  species Southern in distribution. Form true  bulbs  and have 2 n  = 16. Those are thicker and without a petiole. S. multiflorus Found throughout tropical Africa Do not all form bulbs and have 2 n  = 18 chromosomes. Scadoxus  are thinner and have a distinct stalk (petiole) Difference between Haemanthus and sacadoxus species .

This Bulbous lily has peculiar round flower shape. The blooms are big with red/ pink spikes and yellow specks at the ends and lasts for about a week. The simple leaves are smooth and dark green in colour and fresh ones appear after flowering. The plant grows to a height of 12-18 inches and blooms only once a year. Fruit is an orange to red berry PLANT DESCRIPTION

FOOTBALL LILLY - USES It can be grown in beds, borders, rock gardens and edges of pool, for mass effect. 2.It is also an excellent pot-plant. 3.Poisonous part : Bulbs , toxic principle - lycorine .

3. As cut flower it has got tremendous market potentiality. 4.Cut flowers are used for floral decoration. 5.Pot grown plants can be placed inside the room in window, porch, verandah and other situations. USES….

Haemanthus multiflorus : The most important species so far under cultivation in India. Flower spike contains 100 flowers , diameter of the flower-head is 15cm, and col0r is red . Species of football lily 2.H. albiflos : commonly called White Paint Brush due to evergreen white flowers . 3.H.candidus : white flowers of 12cm diameter

4 . H.magnificus : Red flowers with the diameter of 12cm and are very attractive. 5.H.virasenses : White color with large blooms 6.H. katherine : Larger crimson flowers . VARIETY : King Albert species

Its lifecycle completes in two stages. The plant grows in the first stage till Nov-Dec. The fully grown leaves die off in winter and the bulbs remain dormant. Football lily – life cycle With the help of the food stored in these bulbs, the flowers bloom in the second stage. Needs more sun while blooming. Fresh leaves start appearing after the flowering stage

Cultivation practices

Climate Soil A light soil is better. sandy loam soil is ideal. Waterlogging condition is highly detrimental. It comes well in tropical climate. Semi shady place is favourable for its growth and flowering. Cool temperature (< 16 C) is not favourable.

For commercial cultivation medium high land and sunny or semi shady location is ideal .The land should have sufficient drainage capacity because the plant cannot withstand waterlogged condition. The soil is deeply dug out and clods are broken to get good tilth . Weeds are removed and land is leveled. The beds are prepared with the provision f drainage channel. The beds should be 15 cm raised from the ground level. Land preparation

Commercially by Bulbs even sometimes by seeds. BULBS : Propagated by scoring the base of the bulb to promote new bulb-lets . SEEDS : Seeds should be sown as soon as it is collected , as they does not store well.   propagation

Bulbs or saplings can be planted during February / March in pots filled with equal parts of sand, gravel and dried cow dung powder . Spacing :60x90cm planting Planting Depth: Plant the 'bulb' so it is covered by more than twice the height of the bulb.

Basal application - 5 kg cow dung manure or FYM, - 50g ammonium sulphate , -250g superphosphate and - 50g MOP per sq.meter has been found very effective for satisfactory growth and flowering of football lily. Top dressing 50g ammonium sulphate per sq.meter should be done 60 days after planting of bulbs. Fertilizer and Manuring

Keep Pots under trees that do not cast deep shadows . It flowers during summer months. During flower production they need light moisture. After flowering the plants start to produce leaves. During leaf formation the plant requires light irrigation each after 7-10 days till onset of rainy season. After acre growth and flowering

The soil near the base should be loosen to make easy movement of air and water. Weeds and Dried leaves should be removed to keep the field clean. Intercultural operations

As cut flower the demand of football lily is increasing day by day. Flower spikes should be harvested only when the flower heads start to open. Spikes are cut by using sharp knife. Harvest and postharvest practices After cutting of the flowers they should be kept in cold water to get fresh flower. The best time of harvesting is early in the morning or the evening. Yield : 1 flower/plant /year

To get well matured bulb the flower spikes should be removed immediately after drying the flowers. Bulbs are harvested only when the leaves start to dry after yellowing . Irrigation should be stopped 15-20days before lifting of the bulbs. The leaves and shoots should be removed from the bulbs. Then the bulbs washed and dried in shade. 5. Injured bulbs should be discarded. They are stored well in cool, dry and well ventilated room. Bulb harvesting

It is a very hardy bulbous flowering plant. Diseases and pests do not cause damage to this plant. However, the disease like Bulb Rot may appear when water logging condition arises. Draining of excess water should be done to check this disease. Disease and pest
