SKILL TESTS FOR FOOTBALL
It is important to conduct skill testing in addition to
fitness testing to determine the skill level of the player, so
appropriate skill drills can be incorporated into the training
sessions, and possibly individualized training for those
lacking certain skills.
There are some standard soccer skills tests and also many
other variations that coaches use around the world.

McDonald Soccer Test (McDonald 1951)
This test is designed to measure general soccer ability, and is
appropriate for most levels.
Age level. High school through college-age.
Validity: A coefficient of .85 was found by correlating the
test score of 53 college soccer players from three varsity
levels(senior, junior, freshmen) with the subjective ratings of
three coaches.
Reliability not reported.

Mcdonald Soccer Test
Equipment Required: a wall, 30 feet wide and 11.5 feet
high, 3 soccer balls and stopwatch.
Procedure: Three 30-second trials; number of times the
ball can be kicked against the wall (30 feet wide and 11 ½
feet high) from a distance of 9 feet. A soccer ball is placed
on a line, marked 9 feet from the wall. Another two soccer
balls are left 9 feet behind the line in the center of the test
area. On the signal, ”Go,” the player kicks the ball against
the wall as many times as possible in 30 seconds. In the
event of a wild kick, the player may either retrieve the
original ball or use one of the two spare balls. (it is OK to
use the hands to retrieve a ball). All kicks must performed
from the ground behind the restraining line.

Mitchell Soccer Test
ADMINISTRATION & DIRECTIONS :
Mitchell modified the McDonald Soccer Test.
The modifications are as follow: Three trials of
20 seconds each; total number of times the ball
can be legally kicked against a wall target (4 feet
high from base of the wall and 8 feet long) from a
distance of 6 feet. The hand may not be used for
retrieving or taking new ball. A retriever service is
instituted for balls kicked out of play. The test
retest coefficient is reported as 0.89.
