36countriesappliedtoenterthetournament,soqualifyingmatcheswere
requiredtothinthefieldto16.Evenso,therewereseveralnotableabsentees.
ReigningWorldCupholdersUruguaydeclinedtoparticipate,inprotestatthe
refusalofseveralEuropeancountriestotraveltoSouthAmericaforthe
previousWorldCup,whichUruguayhadhostedin1930.Asaresult,the1934
WorldCupistheonlyoneinwhichthereigningchampionsdidnotparticipate.
TheBritishHomeNations,inaperiodofself-imposedexilefromFIFA,also
refusedtoparticipate.FootballAssociationcommitteememberCharles
Sutcliffe’sviewwas:"thenationalassociationsofEngland,Scotland,Walesand
IrelandhavequiteenoughtodointheirownInternationalChampionship
whichseemstomeafarbetterWorldChampionshipthantheonetobestaged
inRome".

Despitetheirroleashosts,Italywerestillrequiredtoqualify,thefirstand
onlytimethehostnationwasnotgrantedautomaticqualification.

The
qualifyingmatcheswerearrangedonageographicalbasis.Withdrawalsby
ChileandPerumeantArgentinaandBrazilqualifiedwithoutplayingasingle
match.
Twelveofthe16placeswereallocatedtoEurope,threetotheAmericas,and
onetoAfricaorAsia(includingTurkey).
Only10ofthe32entrants,andfourofthe16qualifiedteams(Brazil,
Argentina,UnitedStatesandEgypt,thefirstAfricanteamtoqualifyfora
WorldCupfinalstournament),werefromoutsideEurope.Thelastplacein
thefinalswascontestedbetweentheUnitedStatesandMexicoonlythree
daysbeforethestartofthetournamentinaone-offmatchinRome,which
theUnitedStateswon.

Switzerland,UnitedStates
•Themajorityofthe16teamsweremakingtheirfirstWorldCup
appearance.Thisincluded9ofthe12Europeanteams(Italy,Germany,
Spain,theNetherlands,Hungary,Czechoslovakia,Sweden,Austria,and
Switzerland)aswellasEgypt.EgyptwasthefirstteamfromAfricain
thefinalsandwouldnotqualifyagainuntilthenexttimethe
competitionwasheldinItaly,in1990.

Italy as hosts
LiketheBerlinOlympicstwoyearslater,the1934WorldCupwas
ahigh-profileinstanceofasportingeventbeingusedforovert
politicalgain.BenitoMussoliniwaskeentousethetournamentas
ameansofpromotingfascism.
Thenumberofsupporterstravellingfromothercountrieswas
higherthanatanypreviousfootballtournament,including7,000
fromtheNetherlandsand10,000eachfromAustriaand
Switzerland.

ThegroupstageusedinthefirstWorldCupwasdiscardedinfavourofa
straightknockouttournament.Ifamatchwastiedafterninetyminutes,
thenthirtyminutesofextratimewereplayed.Ifthescorewasstilltied
afterextratime,thematchwouldbereplayedthenextday.
Theeightseededteams–Argentina,Brazil,Germany,Italy,the
Netherlands,Austria,CzechoslovakiaandHungary–werekeptapartin
thefirstround.

SUMMARY

Thegreatday,27May1934,wasfastapproaching,andthefascist
propagandamachinewasinfullmotion.All16teamsweresetforaneight-
citysimultaneouskick-offthatwastobeagrandpan-Italianextravaganza.
Itwasthefirstmajortournamenttobebroadcastwidelyontheradio,and
whileindividualswerenotaslikelytoownaradioinItalyastheywouldbe
inGermanyorHolland,whohadeachprocuredrightstobroadcastthe
event,itwasverycommonforItalianstogatherincommunalplacestolisten
tomajorbroadcasts.
InternaldisputesmeantArgentina'ssquadforthetournamentdidnot
containasinglememberoftheteamwhichhadreachedthefinalin1930.

AgainstSwedeninBologna,Argentinatwicetookthelead,buttwogoalsbySven
JonassonandawinnerbyKnutKroongaveSwedena3–2victory.
FellowSouthAmericansBrazilalsosufferedanearlyexit.Spainbeatthem
comfortably;3–1thefinalscore.
Alleightfirstroundmatcheskickedoffatthesametime.HostsandfavouritesItaly
wonhandsomely,defeatingtheUSA7–1;TheNewYorkTimescorrespondentwrote
that"onlythefinegoal-tendingofJuliusHjulianofChicagokeptthescoreaslowas
itwas".
FortheonlytimeinWorldCuphistory,thelasteightconsistedentirelyofEuropean
teams–Austria,Czechoslovakia,Germany,Hungary,Italy,Spain,Sweden,and
Switzerland.Allfournon-EuropeanteamswhomadethejourneytoItalywere
eliminatedafteronematch.

Inthequarter-finals,thefirstreplayedmatchinWorldCup
historytookplace,whenItalyandSpaindrew1–1after
extratime.
Thematchwasplayedinahighlyaggressivemannerwithseveralplayersof
bothsidesinjured:roughplayinjuredtheSpanishgoalkeeperRicardoZamora
inthefirstmatch,leavinghimunabletoparticipateinthereplay,whileonthe
othersideevenrougherplaybySpaniardsbrokethelegoftheItalianMario
Pizziolowhowouldnotplayinthenationalteamagain.
Italywonthereplay1–0,theirplaysophysicalthatatleastthreeSpaniards
hadtodepartthefieldwithinjuries.

ItalythenwentontobeatAustriainthesemi-finalsbythesamescore.
Meanwhile,CzechoslovakiasecuredtheirplaceinthefinalbybeatingGermany
3–1.
TheStadiumoftheNationalFascistPartywasthevenueforthefinal.With
80minutesplayed,theCzechoslovaksled1–0.TheItaliansmanagedtoscore
beforethefinalwhistle,andthenaddedanothergoalinextratimetobe
crownedWorldCupwinners.
Italy'stotalofthreegoalsconcededinfivematches
wasarecordlowforateamwinningthe
WorldCup.
