Research Instrument, Validity, and Reliability

Research Instrument These are basic tools researchers used to gather data for specific research problems. A good research instrument should be validated and proven reliable.

Research Instruments Used in Qualitative Research Observation Interview Focus Group Discussion Document Analysis

Research Instruments Used in Quantitative Research Survey Questionnaires Checklist Tests

What do you think must have been done to avoid the said situation? What can you say about the result of investigation? How will you relate the scenario to the conduct of a quantitative research study?

Characteristics of a Good Research Instrument Concise Sequential Valid and reliable Easily tabulated

Concise A good research instrument is concise in length yet can elicit the needed data.

Sequential Questions must be arranged well. Simplest to the most complex.

Valid and Reliable The instrument should pass the tests of validity and reliability to get more appropriate and accurate information.

Easily Tabulated It must be considered for quantitative research. The researchers must make sure that the variable and research questions are established. These will be an important basis for making items in the research instruments.

Ways in Developing Research Instrument Adopting an instrument (Standardized instrument) Researcher-made instrument Adapting an instrument (Modified Standardized instrument)

1. Standardized Instrument Adopting an instrument It is a pre-existing measurement tool that has been developed and validated by researchers, often through rigorous testing and standardization procedures. VALIDATION: No RELIABILITY: No

2. Researcher-Made Instrument It refers to a measurement tool that is created by the researcher specifically for their study. These are tailored to the unique characteristics and objectives of the study. It offers flexibility, allowing researchers to customize questions and response based on the study’s focus. VALIDATION: Yes RELIABILITY: Yes

3. Modified Standardized Instrument Adapting an instrument It is a pre-existing measurement tool that has been altered or adapted to better suit the specific context or population of a research study. Researchers may make modifications to ensure the instrument’s applicability to the study. VALIDATION: Yes RELIABILITY: Yes

Remember: A valid instrument is a reliable instrument, while a reliable instrument is not always a valid instrument.

Performance Task 2 Using your proposed qualitative research study in your Performance Task 1, provide at least 7 to 10 interview questions based on the objectives of your paper. Remember to consider your general and specific objectives in formulating your interview questions. Write your answer in a whole sheet of paper. Provide also your peer evaluation.

Performance Task 2 Criteria in Grading Content- 10 Organization- 10 Relevance- 10 Mechanics- 10 TOTAL: 40 points

QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE 1. A good research instrument should be validated and proven reliable. 2. A good research instrument must be longer in length.

3. A good research instrument must be arranged from the most complex to the simplest questions. 4. When the researchers adopt research instruments, they do not modify or change the questions. QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE

5. A valid instrument is a reliable instrument, while a reliable instrument is not always a valid instrument. QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE

6. In conducting interview, you have to secure a letter of communication first. 7. The interview questions must be based on your research questions. QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE

8. Let the researchers choose where the interview will be conducted. 9. It is alright to ask personal questions to the interviewee even if it’s not related to the research study. QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE

10. Being polite and respectful is one way to establish good relationship and communication with your participants. QUIZ #2: TRUE or FALSE
