Four Playboy Playmates that made history Contains nudity Viewer discretion advised

Bettie Page - First Underage Playmate

Bettie Page The Innocent Bondage Model Playboy Playmate in January 1955 Bettie Page was a pin-up model of the 1950s who was unaware that her beauty and style would inspire comic books, fashion stylists and commercial products for decades. She only viewed her job as a pin up queen as fun and many of the outfits she wore were designed and made on her own which includes her lingerie, bikinis, and a lot of her dresses. Even the iconic hair was another of her choices. She captured the imagination of a generation with her combination of naughty and innocent. She had no qualms about doing full nudity at a time when talking about sex was a taboo. Bettie Page died at the age of 85 in December 2008.

Bettie Page The Innocent Bondage Model Playboy Playmate in January 1955  Bettie Mae Page was born in Nashville, Tenesse in 1923 and was the second of six children. In 1949, she moved to New York with aspirations of becoming an actress. It was there she met the bondage photographer, Irving Klaw , who created a large collection of Bettie Page in bondage outfit from 1952 to 1957. The images where Bettie Page poses in bondage outfit would make her famous. Full nudity and photos in bondage outfit was revolutionary for America in the 50s where the government tried to suppress the distribution of sexually explicit material. The bondage photos were innocent compared to our time but in the 50s they were not acceptable and lead to a U.S Senate investigation in the 1950s.

Bettie Page The Innocent Bondage Model Playboy Playmate in January 1955 Bettie Page’s most professional photographs were taken in 1955 by fashion photographer Bunny Yeager. They included shots of Page nude and frolicking in waves and deep-sea fishing, and a January 1955 Playboy centerfold. Page wore nothing but a Santa hat in Playboy's January 1955 centerfold. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner said her appearance in his magazine's first year was a milestone. "She became, in time, an American icon, her winning smile and effervescent personality apparent in every pose” according to Hefner   In 1957 at the height of her popularity and with a promising acting career before her, she quit, and wasn’t seen in public for more than 30 years. She experienced a religious inclination and said to have been born-again Christian In 1987,

Elizabeth Ann Roberts - First Underage Playmate

Elizabeth Ann Roberts The first underage teen playmate Playboy Playmate in January 1958 Elizabeth Ann Roberts, Playmate of the Month for January 1958, looked like a high school student--because she was! Born in August 1941, the pretty 16-year-old showed up for her photo shoot with a note signed by her mother (who actually accompanied Elizabeth!).

Elizabeth Ann Roberts The first underage teen playmate Playboy Playmate in January 1958 Mom's note gave the okay for her daughter to pose for Playboy and also attested that Elizabeth was not a minor. Roberts appeared in a pictorial salaciously titled "Schoolmate Playmate." Her elegant but very youthful appearance prompted an investigation.

Elizabeth Ann Roberts The first underage teen playmate Playboy Playmate in January 1958  Charges were laid in Chicago against both Playboy impresario Hugh Hefner and Elizabeth's mother for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor." The charge against Hefner was later dropped when it could not be proved that Hefner knew Roberts' real age. Had the case proceeded to court, Hefner was prepared to argue that the girl who posed nude for the famous 1912 painting September Morn was only 15 ..

Elizabeth Ann Roberts The first underage teen playmate Playboy Playmate in January 1958 Roberts later worked as a bunny in Chicago's Playboy Club. There have been at least seven Playboy Playmates of the Month who were under 18 years of age. Almost all appeared before 1967 when previously vague laws pertaining to modelling for art, erotica, and pornography were clarified and tightened.

China Lee - First Asian American Playmate

China Lee First Asian American Playmate Playboy Playmate in August 1964 China Lee was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and was 21 years old when she appeared as Playboy Playmate in August 1964. At that time, China Lee was a training bunny in the Playboy Club Empire, where her teaching duties would take her to different locations with every new Playboy Club opening.

China Lee First Asian American Playmate Playboy Playmate in August 1964 In Playboy Magazine, China Lee was portrayed as an active and athletic female with ambitions to become a professional singer.

China Lee First Asian American Playmate Playboy Playmate in August 1964 As a result of her Playmate appearance she signed a contract with Ava Records. China Lee was one of the most popular playmates in 1964 but lost the Playmate of the year title Lee made her film debut playing a hooker in the comedy  The Troublemaker  (1964).  She then joined a gaggle of starlets as anonymous gold lame bikini-clad robots in  Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine  (1965) a takeoff on James Bond’s  Goldfinger .  The film that brought China Lee most fame was her strip tease performance in Woody Allen’s What’s Up, Tiger Lily?  (1966). Though the movie brought Lee to the masses as the still of her in her swimsuit was used to promote the movie worldwide it didn’t bring her any significant film role

Jennifer Jackson - First African American Playmate

Jennifer Jackson The First African American Playmate Playboy Playmate in March 1965 Jennifer Jackson broke racial barriers when she became the first black Playmate of the Month in March 1965.   She was born in 1945, Februrary 6, Chicago, Illinois.

Jennifer Jackson The First African American Playmate Playboy Playmate in March 1965 Jackson's selection as a Playmate caused much controversy at the time, with Hugh Hefner and the magazine receiving a flood of letters, not all supportive, regarding the decision. Interestingly , the article that accompanied Jennifer's pictorial doesn't make any reference to her race or her "pioneering" status.

Jennifer Jackson The First African American Playmate Playboy Playmate in March 1965 Jennifer Jackson worked as a Bunny at the Playboy Club in Chicago along with her twin sister Janis.
