1. HOW INDIA GOT IT’S FREEDOM India won its freedom from British colonial rule in 1947, after many decades of struggle. Mohandas Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, joined the fight in 1914 and led the country to independence, using his method of nonviolent protest known as satyagraha .India remained a Dominion of the Crown until 26 January 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force, establishing the Republic of India; Pakistan was a dominion until 1956 when it adopted its first republican constitution.
2. WHAT WERE THE 3 MAJOR PHASES OF FREEDOM STRUGGLE The Early Nationalist Phase (1885-1905)
The Assertive Phase (1905-1918)
The Gandhian Phase (1919-1947) i The Early Nationalists, also known as the Moderates, were a group of political leaders in India active between 1885 and 1907. Leader: W.C. Banerjee; Rash Behari Ghosh
ii The main objective of the Assertive Nationalists was the immediate attainment of ‘’Swaraj’. They wanted to intensify the struggle, to take it to the common people, to awaken the masses politically, to secure their participation in the national movement and to force the government to bow before public opinion.BAL GANGADHAR TILAK’S CONTRIBUTION AS AN ASSERTIVE NATIONALIST .Bal Gangadhar Tilak is known as the ‘Father of Assertive Nationalism’. He played a leading role in popularising the cult of patriotism and making the Congress movement broad-based. He was the first to openly declare the demand for Swaraj. He believed that political rights could be achieved by aggressively demanding them. He started two newspapers through which he preached nationalism. He started the Home Rule League in Pune in 1916.
The third and final phase of the Nationalist Movement [1917-1947] is known as the Gandhian era. During this period Mahatma Gandhi became the undisputed leader of the National Movement. His principles of nonviolence and Satyagraha were employed against the British Government. iii
