The Nature of Arts
TALENT ? or SKILL ?
There are varied ways to define the nature and characteristics of arts. It is a concept which basically provides color and substance to our everyday existence as humans.
“Life without art is dull and without meaning.”
Art basically stimulates our senses and cognitive abilities as it allows the expression of emotions and subjective self.
Art is a tangible manifestation and product of human activity that allows the expression of individuality through a set of skills.
Art is a means of communicating or conveying insights and emotions. It is a way by which we, as viewers, appreciate what is being conveyed by the painter or sculpture, or writer.
This allows the development of a relationship through appreciation of the work of art. FORMS, COLORS, SHAPES, LINES and MOVEMENT TRANSMIT EMOTIONS.
Art is defined in varied ways.
According to Plato (427 – 347 BC) Art is merely an imitation or a copy of reality. For him, art is an illusion, a collection of reflections.
He stated that true forms were created by God and they are all perfect and therefore cannot be replicated. This argument shows how art is considered by Plato as mere imitations of what is real in our environment.
According to Leo Tolstoy Art is the production of objects or elements from the external environment that pleases the senses.
Art unifies men as they produce the same feelings and sentiments. The same may lead to a better and more progressive life and society.
According to Eugene Veron Art is an external manifestation created and produced through lines, movements, sounds, colors and emotions.
This defines the subjectivity of art as an external manifestation of human feeling and thoughts. Art in this definition reflects human subjectivity in the form of elements that stimulates the senses.
According to Leonardo Da Vinci Art is the “Queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world.”
Such line reiterates how art reveals an individual’s imagination. It is a universal language that communicates feelings and ideas produced by human experiences. It is a powerful form of communication expressing creativity and skill.
The quality of artistry is gauged through standards. The elements of arts determine its basic measure. We cannot be able to communicate the uniqueness of our sentiments and emotions without fully understanding those that comprised the elements of arts.
FORM This elements includes shape and perceived volume. To exemplify, a three-dimensional (3D) artwork has depth. Width and height. This form is the basis of sculpture. On the other hand, a two dimensional work of art can produce an illusion through the use of shading and modeling techniques.
LINE Lines also termed as ‘strokes’ in digital art work marks the distance between two points which is used for outlines and implied lines in artwork and design. It has WIDTH called as ‘THICKNESS; it has DIRECTION as well as LENGTH. Lines also create a moving point or object which can be straight, jagged, broken, dashed , diagonal, vertical horizontal curved, parallel etc.
COLOR Color is the element that is produced when light strikes an image. It is derived from the reflected or absorbed light and definitely creates the mood of the artist. Its properties includes the following: Hue – the term or title we assign to color Intensity – the vividness of the color. It is the saturation, strength or intensity of the image’s color.
VALUE (Color) It is the lightness or darkness of the color. Changes in the tint determine the value changes in color.
SPACE Space is provided by the artist for specific purpose. This may include the foreground, middle ground and area between the images or objects which may be negative or positive.
It is positive when an area is occupied by an object or image and it is negative when it covers the space between and within the image.
TEXTURE Texture denotes the smoothness, ruggedness of the image or object. It may be “REAL” similar to that when we touch a sculpture. Texture may also be “IMPLIED” which is also artificial as when we see in painted image of a pebble.
SHAPE Could be geometric, natural, irregular, rectangle, oval, etc. it could be 2D or 3D where a line crosses over that creates a shape. It produces image in a flat area according to how reality is represented.
