Medieval art- Medieval art” applies to various media, including sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, tapestries, stained glass, metalwork, and mosaics. Early medieval art in Europe is  an amalgamation of the artistic heritage of the Roman Empire, the early Christian church, and the “barbarian” artistic culture of Northern Europe .

CLASSICAL ART PAINTINGS

Paintings from MEDIEVAL ART- “ BYZANTINE PAINTING The lively styles of paintings which have been invented in Greek and Rome lived on in Byzantium but this time for Christian subjects. Byzantine empress, wife of the  emperor   Justinian I  (reigned 527–565), probably the most powerful woman in  Byzantine  history. Her intelligence and political  acumen  made her Justinian’s most trusted adviser and enabled her to use the power and influence of her office to promote religious and social policies that favoured her interests Theodora was an Asian Queen with dark eyes and hair with fierce expression THE COURT OF EMPRESS THEODORA, MOSAIC

Romanesque painting These are largely placed mosaics on the walls of the churches that follow a strict frontal pose. It also shows traces of Mozarabic influence (Arabize Influence) through elongated oval faces, large staring eyes and long nose, figures against flat colored bands and heavy outlining. “CHRIST IN MAJESTY”

Paintings from the gothic era - paintings have been confined in the illumination of manuscript pages and the painting of frescoes on the walls of churches in cosmopolitan style, elegant mannered, and sophisticated. “Lady and the Unicorn Tapestry”- Subjects depict popular legends, and love stories. Patterns like” mille fleur” or thousand flowers became popular. “Rose window from the North transcept ”- Stained glass windows were created to transform the vast stone interiors with warm and glowing color and at the same time to instruct Christians in their faith “The sheperd David”- Tha painting shows some realistic details and naïve naturalism.

SCULPTURE

Byzantine sculptures- the dominant themes are religious, everyday life scenes, and motifs from nature . Animals used as symbols (dove, deer, peafowl) while some had acrostic signs (form of writing in which a message is formed by taking the first letter, syllable, or word of different lines and putting them together) that contained a great theological significance. THE BARBERINI DIPTYCH- The Barberini ivory is a Byzantine ivory leaf from an imperial diptych dating from Late Antiquity, now in the Louvre in Paris. It represents the emperor as triumphant victor

ROMANESQUE SCULPTURES Famous sculptural pieces are reliquaries, altar frontals, crucifixes, and devotional image. These devotional images were usually carried during processions both inside and outside churches. “ LAST JUDGEMENT ” IVORY DEPICTING TWO SCENES OF CHRIST AND THE APOSTLES PLAQUE WITH CHRIST RECEIVING MAGDEBURG CATHEDRAL FROM EMPEROR OTTO I ALABASTER DEPICTING THE ROAD TO CALVARY

GOTHIC SCULPTURE Gothic Sculptures have a greater freedom of style. They no longer lay closely against the wall, but begun to project outward. Figures were given their own particular attitudes. More lively and realistic. “RESURRECTION OF THE VIRGIN ” The Sacred Tradition of Eastern Christianity teaches that the Virgin Mary died a natural death (the Dormition of the Theotokos , the falling asleep), like any human being; that her soul was received by Christ upon death; and that her body was resurrected on the third day after her repose, at which time she was taken up

ARCHITECTURE FROM THE EARLY AGE

BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE MOSAIC decoration was perfected by the byzantine, as was the use of clerestory to bring light in from high windows and the developing of DOME created a new style in global architecture. Hagia Sophia, officially the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, is a mosque and major cultural and historical site in Istanbul, Turkey. Originally a Greek Orthodox church, the site has changed between being a mosque to a museum and now presently a mosque again since the conquest of the Byzantine Empire by the Ottoman Empire

Romanesque architecture The doorways of Romanesque churches are often grand sculptured portals. Wood or metal doors are surrounded by elaborate stone sculptures arranged in zones to fit architectural elements. Worcester Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Worcester, England, situated on a bank overlooking the River Severn. It is the seat of the Bishop of Worcester. Its official name is the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Mary the Virgin, of Worcester.

Gothic architecture This design included two new devices: pointed arch which enabled builders to construct much higher ceiling vaults and stone vaulting borne on a network of stone ribs supported by piers and clustered pillars. “ CATHEDRAL OF CHARTRES ” Has rich architecture and design Splendid stained glass windows thousands of sculptured figures The cathedral's made it  the destination of pilgrims in the Middle Ages , many of them invades seeking a cure for their afflictions. It continues to be a pilgrimage site for Roman Catholics in the 21st century.
