In the mid 1980s ,
fertility
programs around the world were
continuing to struggle with poor
success rates for IVF .
Although GIFT technically
stands for
“Gamete
Intrafallopian Transfer ”
most patients referred to it as
putting
“Gametes Into the
Fallopian Tube”.
Introduction
GIFT can be used to treat
many types of infertility,
except in cases where there
is damage or abnormalities
of the both fallopian tubes.
These techniques can also be
used in cases of male
infertility , as long as the
sperm is capable of
fertilizing an egg .
If the woman is not
capable of producing
eggs that can be used
in GIFT , but her
partner's sperm is
capable of fertilization,
they might consider
getting eggs from a
donor.
Women over age35are less likely to have viable
eggs and more likely to have children with birth
defects than younger women .
One reason for using an egg donor is age.
A woman with premature ovarian failure, a condition in
which menopause has begun early, might also consider
a donor if she wants to carry a child.
Most egg donation is anonymous, but some couples
prefer to know their egg donor and take legal steps to
contract for the donation of the eggs.
THE GIFT PROCEDURE
PRE-EXAMINATION OF THE CONCEIVING
SURROUNDING IN WOMEN’S BODY:
After showing interest
in GIFT treatment, the
fertility expert will
examine you and an
X-ray will be taken to
determine the health
status of your
Fallopian tubes.
In other cases, there
must at least be one
healthy Fallopian tube
for the procedure to be
conducted.
A laparoscopy will be
performed to check the
Fallopian tubes or
determine the presence
of scar tissue on the
outside wall.
CHECKING OF MAN’S SPERMS:
Adjoining process
of man sperm count
is checked to
determine if proper
health sperms are
there to carry
forward the
fertilization
process.
OVULATION
AND EGG
RETRIEVAL:
Medications are
given to female
counterpart so
that multiple
mature eggs can
be formed.
The follicles are
monitored every
two days so that
proper formation
of eggs can be
well monitored.
After having fertility drugs
or natural ovulation, the
well-formed timely eggs
will be retrieved through a
laparoscopic surgery by
extracting the eggs from
the follicles and your male
partner will provide
sperms on the same day in
case donor sperms aren’t
necessary.
Normally 8 – 16 eggs are
retrieved at this time.
FERTILIZATION PROCESS:
This process is carried out
by Embryologist
After mixing the eggs and
the sperms, they will be
transferred back into the
woman’s body
via her vagina
with the help
of a catheter.
SURGICAL PROCESS TO
TRANSFER THE EGGS AND
SPERMS:
Through laparoscopy
and making a small
incision on stomach, the
eggs and sperm mixture
from the catheter is
transferred into one of
the fallopian tube.
SUCCESSFUL IMPLANTATION SIGNAL IS
SIGNALED WITH EMBRYO FORMATION
If after transferring the
mixture of eggs and
sperms, an embryo is
formed after few days,
then if implantation is
successful then
pregnancy rates
increases.
The woman is
additionally placed on
medications that facilitate
to make the female
internal reproductive
organ lining to facilitate
implantation throughout
this era.
How long
does GIFT
take?
A gamete intra-fallopian transfer
can be fully completed inoneand
ahalfmonths.
This includes the entire process
beginning from the initiation of the
hormonal therapy and right until
implantation.
The surgical procedure alone
would take a little more thaneight
hours, and you can go back home
on the same day as the operation.
TAKE A
PREGNANCY
TEST:
Pregnancy test can be done two weeks after
surgery.

Cost
ZIFT and GIFT may not be available in all areas.
These procedures cost approximately $15,000 to
$20,000 for each attempt.
In vitro fertilization usually costs less.
ADVANTAGES
OF GIFT
TREATMENT
The GIFT
procedure
provides a belief
of natural
conception with
the fact that
fertilization takes
place inside the
body of a woman
than in the
laboratory dish.
It is much more affordable than
IVF and with that, a couple can
easily foot the GIFT treatment
cost in India than other ART
treatments.
It is a convenient
procedure since it
requires no
hospitalization or
extensive fertility
workout .
There are many
couples out there
who are unable to
conceive despite
earnest and
dedicated attempts.
The advancement in the field of medicine has
made available the assisted reproductive
technology (ART).
But how can one determine as to which one is
the best for them?
IVF, ZIFT, and GIFT- all have their
pros and cons.
Disadvantages
of GIFT
There is a chance of
multiple pregnancies if
more than one egg is used.
This can lead to a
miscarriage or
financial/emotional burden
of raising more kids than
initially intended.
It is invasive due to the use of a
laparoscopy which increases the chance
of complications.
There is a risk of ectopic pregnancy
where the egg gets implanted outside
the uterus.
Babies born using this method
have a higher susceptibility to
congenital disabilities.
There is a chance that the
treatment does not work.
The procedure relies on the
same methods used for IVF in
ovary simulation.
If you have experienced
ovarian hyperstimulation
during IVF, there is a chance
that you will experience the
same with GIFT .
While rare, there is a small
chance of infection that can
develop during this surgery.
There is no validation method to know if
fertilization has taken place.
The entire process is time-consuming and
expensive.
Bioethical
issues
Gamete intrafallopian
transfer is not technically
in vitro fertilization
because with GIFT,
fertilization takes place
inside the body, not on a
petri dish.
As with most fertility
procedures, success
depends on the
couple's age and the
Success rate .
woman's egg quality.
It is estimated that approximately 25–30%
of GIFT cycles result in pregnancy , with a
third of those being twins or triplets, etc.
Some Catholic moral
theologians are
nevertheless concerned
with it because they
"consider
this to be a
replacement of the
marital act, and
therefore immoral."
The First GIFT
baby in the US was
Kaitlynne Kelley
born on 28 April
1987.
•In Venezuela, the first GIFT babies were
Luis Hernández,
Rosa Helena Hernández and
Luisa Hernández ,
who were born on 24 June 1987 and were also the
first triplets to be born using the GIFT method.
•The first application of this
method in Latin America
was held in Argentina on 13
May 1986, and was led by
Dr. Ricardo Asch , the
treatment was successfully
completed with the birth of
Manuel Campo Lopez .
