•Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction in
which a new offspring is produced by a single parent.
•The new individuals produced are genetically and
physically identical to each other, i.e., they are the
clones of their parents.
•Asexual reproduction is observed in both multicellular
and unicellular organisms.
•Sexual reproduction occurs when the sperm from the
male parent fertilizes an egg from the female parent,
producing an offspring that is genetically different from
both parents.
•Sexual reproduction is a natural process that occurs in
many multicellular organisms, including animals,
fungi, and plants.

SPERMATOGENESIS
•The developmental pathway
from germ cell (stem cell) to
mature sperm.
•Begin at puberty in males
(starts from ~14 years age).
•Occurs in the space between
the Sertoli cells of testis.

2.Growth phase:
•The spermatogonia absorb nourishment from the sertoli cell (nurse
cells) and increase in size along with the increase in nucleus. These
enlarged cells are called primary spermatocytes.
1.Multiplication phase:
•The proliferation of germ cells by mitosis at sexual maturity resulting
in the formation of large number of diploid spermatogonia.

3.Maturation phase:
•Two maturation divisions take place in each primary spermatocyte.
The first division is meiotic division, which is completed by giving
two haploid secondary spermatocytes. Each secondary spermatocyte is
subjected to second maturation division to give four haploid
spermatids. Thus each primary spermatocyte gives rise to four
spermatids.

Spermatid formation is divided into 3 phases:

•Acrosome condenses around the nucleus
1.Golgi Phase:
•Golgi body Enzymes form the acrosome

•Centriole elongates to form the tail

Spermatozoa /Spermiogenesis formation is divided into 4 phases:
4.Maturation Phase:
•Loss of excess cytoplasm

•The mouse takes 34.5 days to develop from stem cell
to spermatozoon/sperm.
•In humans the whole process of spermatogenesis,
from spermatogonia to spermatozoa takes
approximately 74 days for an immature sperm cell to
mature and form a mature sperm.
TOTAL DURATION OF SPERMATOGENESIS

•The mature sperms are transported into the epididymis
from where it is ejected out of the male body.
•A healthy adult male can produce between 200–300
million sperm per day, which is about 1,500 sperm
per second and each ejaculation produces
approximately 200-300 million sperm.. However,
only about 50–100 million of those sperm become
viable each day.
