What is Gatekeeping Theory?
■The gatekeeping theory of mass communication is a method which allows us to
keep our sanity.
■By consuming content that is most relevant to us each day, we can ignore the
billions of additional data points that are calling for our attention.

Who Presented?
■The idea was first posited by Kurt Lewin (1890-1947), a German psychologist
and pioneer in social psychology.
■Proposed this theory in “1943”
■He coined the word called“Gate keeping” in his studies.
■First it was used in Physiology and sociology.
■David Manning white used the theory in Mass Communication.

Features of Gatekeeping Theory
■Surveillance
■It sets the standard For newsworthiness
■Media plays a role of a watchdog.
■It is also used as a social control for media influence.

Examples of Gatekeeping Theory
■Ice skating is not popular in countries with tropical climate. If the media of those
countries show those issues, people will not have any interest and might totally
skip the page or change channels in television. The topic is not appropriate for
the area but can be very famous topic for countries like South Korea or Finland.
The editor must try to replace the story with something else.
