COURSE DESCRIPTION Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops students’ communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal
tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for
critical evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The
knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavovors,their chosen disciplines, and their future careers as they
compose and produce relevant oral,written, audio visual and/or web-based output for various purposes.

In the context of the specific field of specialization, the students will be able to:
1.describe the ubiquitous nature of communication and arrive at an understanding that communication takes a relatively varied meaning based on context
2.explain how glocal issues affect communication in its different modalities to determine culturally appropriate terms, expressions, and images

All written outputs, oral presentations, and midterm/final-term exams are
graded requirements and are used mainly in the computation of the final
grades, i.e., the combined midterm and final-term grades. Written outputs
and oral presentations (pair/group) are graded requirements using analytic
rubrics. They promote learner cooperation in a competitive spirit in the
accomplishment of the assigned tasks. Midterm/final-term examinations vary
depending on the disciplinal track of the students (intra/inter/multi). The exams
are pragmatic in nature. Hence, they promote the enhancement of
communication proficiency in the spoken and written language with greater
sensitivity to the pluricentricity of meanings.
