Genderlect “Gender dialect” Men and women completely communicate in different ways just like a cross-cultural format. It states that women seek for connection and intimacy while men seek s tatus and avoid questions.

Genderlect Miscommunication happens because people don’t realize that they are engaging in cross cultural communication. Genderlect suggests that masculine and feminine styles of speaking are best understood as two distinct ways of speaking rather than assuming one is superior

Rapport Talk vs. Report Talk Rapport talk - is the typical conversational style of women, which seeks to establish connection with others. Report talk – is the typical monologue style of men, which seeks to command attention, convey information, and win arguments.

Public and Private Speaking Women talk more in private conversations, while men strive for one up positioning and avoid small talk or disclosure. Publicly, men vie for ascendancy and speak more than women.

Storytelling Men tell more jokes than women. Because jokes are primarily about status. Women tell stories about other people, which emphasizes connectivity. Men are heroes in their own stories.

Listening Women: During conversation, women maintain eye contact, nod, and use other affirmative responses. By engaging to this kind of behavior, women show compassion and express overtly, that they are actively involve in the conversation. Men: For men, when someone interrupts them, they view the move as an attempt to gain a one up on their conversation and de-stabilize their status and masculinity.

Asking Question Women: Asking questions provides connection, regardless the length of time connection occurs. In the event that women make statements or give opinions, they will use tag questions in the end. Tag questions promote dialogue rather than disagreement. Men: Seek make save face by not asking for help. They engage in self restoration which is a face work strategy used to freedom.
