Metabolism Metabolism refers to the entire set of life-sustaining chemical reactions that occur organisms . Overall network of chemical processes involved in maintaining life. Metabolism is a central theme in biochemistry; it keeps cells and organisms alive, by giving them the energy they need to carry on and the building blocks they require for growth and propagation Reactions are those responsible for getting energy from food, processing and removal of waste, building up muscles, growth, photosynthesis in plants, cell division, and reproduction. It include thousands of consecutive enzymatic reactions
2 Phases of Metabolism Catabolism Involves degradative reactions Complex molecules are break up into smaller and simpler molecules Overall reactions are generally oxidative Chemical energy of metabolism is conserved in the form of ATP Anabolism Involves synthetic reactions Complex molecules are formed from smaller and simpler precursor molecules Overall reactions are generally reductive in nature This requires input of chemical energy in the form of ATP
