Definition and Importance • International law is a set of fundamental rules recognized by nations. • It maintains peace, justice, and cooperation among states. • It guides nations when treaties or customs are unclear.

Main Principles (Part 1) 1. Sovereign Equality – All states are equal under international law. Example: Each country has the same legal standing in the UN. 2. Non-Intervention – No country should interfere in another’s internal affairs. Example: Respecting another nation’s elections or policies. 3. Prohibition of Force – Countries cannot use force except in self-defense or with UN approval.

Main Principles (Part 2) 4. Peaceful Settlement of Disputes – Use negotiation, mediation, or arbitration to solve conflicts. 5. Respect for Human Rights – Protect the dignity and freedom of all people. 6. Self-Determination – Nations have the right to govern themselves and choose their political status.

Additional Principles 7. Good Faith (Pacta Sunt Servanda) – States must honor their treaties honestly. 8. International Cooperation – Nations should work together for global peace and progress.

Relevance to the Philippines • The Philippines is an active member of the United Nations. • It supports the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for maritime rights. • Participates in peacekeeping and environmental treaties. • Promotes respect for human rights and global cooperation.

Summary and Conclusion • International law is the foundation of global order. • Promotes peace, equality, and cooperation among nations. • The Philippines upholds these principles in global affairs. “Peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice.”
