About This Presentation

General Safety Aspects in
Anaerobic WWT

General Safety Aspects
Danger sources and risks
Three sources
•Waste water
•Chemicals
•Biogas
Risks and dangerous aspects
•Infection hazards
•Fire and explosion
•Toxification

General Safety Aspects
Infection hazards
Can occur when in contact with waste water
or chemicals
Contact on skin
•wash with water and soap
•change dirty clothing
•vaccination
Internal contact (swallowing)
•For waste water normally no danger
•For chemicals contact doctor for medical aid

General Safety Aspects
Fire and explosion
Inflammable biogas is produced in anaerobic
process
Installation is designed according to hazardous
area regulation
Installed equipment within hazardous area is
Eex -proof

General Safety Aspects
Hazardous area’s
Zone 0
•Area where explosive circumstances are normally
present .
Zone 1
•Area where explosive circumstances occur regularly
Zone 2
•Area where explosive circumstances normally not
occur during normal operation, but can happen for a
short period of time during calamities .

General Safety Aspects
Hazardous area’s in installation
Zone 0
•Inside gas space UASB reactor
•Inside biogas pipe
Zone 1
•Biogas line (sampling valves)
Zone 2
•Area of 4 meter radius around relief at UASB reactor.

General Safety Aspects
Toxification
Toxification hazard is caused by production of
H
2S gas (Hydrogensulphide) as a result of
biochemical reduction of SO
4 (Sulphate)
H
2S gas is a colorless toxic gas with an
unpleasant smell of rotten eggs

General Safety Aspects
H2S gas characteristics
Lower smell limit 0.0005 - 0.13 ppm
Upper smell limit approx. 200 ppm
MAC-value 10 ppm
Evacuation Alarm limit 50 ppm

General Safety Aspects
Technical measurements
Automated installation
Fail to safe control loops
This design is not fully enclosed. Ventgas from
settler area of UASB reactor will be transferred
by ventgas blower B-501 to the aerobic
treatment. Ventgas pipe on the settler is drilled
hole close to the flange to avoid vacuum
condition inside settler
Zero emission under normal conditions

General Safety Aspects
Personal measurements
Personal working habits
•apply hygienic routines
•respect work and safety procedures
Personal safety measurements
•Protective working clothes, shoes
•Portable H
2S monitor is advised
