Physics in Enhancing Quality of Life 11th Grade Learning Competency: Identify various ways physics enhances our quality of life across different areas, including household activities, health and safety, work productivity, and leisure.
Physics It is the study of matter , energy , and interaction between them.
a. Matter It is anything that has mass and takes up space. It can exist in different forms.
b. Energy It is the ability to do work or cause change. It comes in many forms.
c. Interaction between Matter & Energy It refers to the forces and effects that happen when matter and energy come into contact or affect each other.
Physics It is the ”instruction manual” of the universe.
Have you ever thought about how physics is involved when you cook your food, use your phone, or even wear a seatbelt?
Lesson Objectives: 1 Understand how physics is applied in everyday life. 2 Identify examples of physics in household activities, health and safety, work productivity, and leisure. 3 Appreciate how physics contributes to improving the quality of life.
Which technologies do you use everyday? Can you imagine life without them?
In Household Activities In Health and Safety In Work Productivity In Leisure Examples of Physics
In Household Activities Examples of Physics
In Household Activities Refrigerators remove heat from food items, keeping them cool. Concept : Heat transfer (2nd L aw of Thermodynamics).
Thermodynamics It deals with heat, temperature, and how energy is transferred or transformed.
2 nd Law of Thermodynamics (Heat Transfer) It states that heat naturally flows from a hotter body to a cooler one.
In Household Activities Refrigerants absorb heat from inside and release it outside through the compressor.
In Household Activities The spinning motion in washing machines pushes water out of clothes. Concept : Centripetal force
Centripetal Force A force that keeps an object moving in a circular path by pulling it toward the center of the circle.
In Household Activities Microwaves emit electromagnetic radiation that excites water molecules in food. Concept : Energy transfer through electromagnetic waves.
Electromagnetic Waves Waves of energy that travel through space at the speed of light.
Energy Transfer The movement of energy from one object or system to another, often changing form.
In Health and Safety Examples of Physics
In Health and Safety Medical Imaging It is the process of creating pictures of the inside of the human body using different types of technology. Concept : Electromagnetic Waves and Nuclear Physics
Type of Medical Imaging: In Health and Safety 1. X-rays Uses x-rays to penetrate tissues but are absorbed by bones.
In Health and Safety Type of Medical Imaging: 2. Ultrasound Uses sound waves to image internal organs.
In Health and Safety Type of Medical Imaging: 3. MRI Uses magnetic fields and radio waves to image soft tissues.
Radiation Therapy In Health and Safety It is a medical treatment which uses high-frequency radiation to kill cancer cells. Concept : Electromagnetic Waves
Safety Devices In Health and Safety These tools or systems designed to prevent accidents, reduce injuries, or protect people and equipment from harm.
Examples of Vehicle Safety In Health and Safety 1. Seatbelts Concept : Inertia and Newton's First Law of Motion
Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion (Inertia) Object at rest stay at rest unless acted upon by force. Objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by force.
Examples of Safety Devices In Health and Safety 2. Airbags Concept : Rapid gas expansion and momentum
Momentum It is a measure of how hard it is to stop a moving object.
In Work Productivity Examples of Physics
In Work Productivity Computer and Smartphones 1. Transistors It can turn a current on or off, or make weak signals stronger.
In Work Productivity Computer and Smartphones 2. Processors It is the brain of a computer or electronic device
Semi-conductor Physics It is the branch of physics that studies materials that can act like both conductors and insulators, depending on certain conditions.
In Work Productivity Simple Machines These are basic mechanical devices that make work easier
In Work Productivity Simple Machines These are basic mechanical devices that make work easier
Mechanical Advantage It is the number that tells you how much a machine multiplies your force.
In Leisure Examples of Physics
Sports Equipment In Leisure Carbon fiber is a very strong, lightweight material made from thin strands of carbon atoms bonded together in a crystal-like structure.
Material Science It is the study of materials — what they are made of, how they behave, and how they can be used or improved.
Sports Equipment (Concept: Aerodynamics) In Leisure
Aerodynamics It is the study of how air moves around objects — especially objects that are moving through the air.
Virtual Reality is a computer-generated environment that simulates a real or imaginary world, allowing users to see, hear, and sometimes interact with it as if they were actually there. In Leisure
Optics It is the branch of physics that studies light — how it behaves, how it travels, and how it interacts with objects.
Sensors It is a device that detects changes in the environment and converts them into signals that machines or humans can understand.
IS THERE ANY QUESTION?
Physics Detective Activity Analyze the Physics around the given scenario. Group 1: Ice melts faster on metal than on wood. Group 2: A basketball bounces lower each time. Group 3: A student slides farther on a smooth floor than on a rough one. Group 4: A balloon sticks to a wall after being rubbed on your hair. Group 5: A glass bottle breaks when frozen water expands inside it.
