Definição e causas da desertificação A desertificação é um processo de degradação do solo que ocorre em locais áridos, semiáridos e secos, o que resulta na redução da produtividade biológica e econômica da terra. A diminuição da cobertura vegetal, a redução da biodiversidade, a erosão do solo e a diminuição da capacidade de retenção de água caracterizam esse fenômeno.

Os principais fatores que contribuem para a desertificação Atividades Humanas: Ações humanas, como desmatamento, agricultura não sustentável, pastoreio excessivo, irrigação mal planejada e práticas inadequadas de manejo do solo, podem acelerar o processo de desertificação. Alterações Climáticas: Como aumento da temperatura, diminuição das chuvas e alterações nos padrões de precipitação, podem contribuir para a desertificação, tornando as áreas secas ainda mais suscetíveis à degradação do solo. Desmatamento: O desmatamento remove a cobertura vegetal que protege o solo da erosão causada pelo vento e pela água, aumentando a vulnerabilidade à desertificação.

Má Gestão da Água: A irrigação inadequada pode levar à salinização do solo, tornando-o infértil e suscetível à desertificação. O uso excessivo de água de aquíferos subterrâneos pode esgotar esses recursos, deixando o solo seco e propenso à degradação. Expansão Urbana: O crescimento das áreas urbanas: pode resultar na destruição de habitats naturais, fragmentação de ecossistemas e aumento da impermeabilização do solo, contribuindo para a desertificação nas áreas circundantes. Sobrepastoreio : O pastoreio excessivo por animais pode levar à compactação do solo, diminuindo a sua capacidade de retenção de água e nutrientes, e contribuindo para a erosão e a desertificação.

Impactos da desertificação De modo geral a desertificação pode trazer diversas consequências para a população e os ambientes semiáridos. São impactos que podem ser de cunho natural, social ou econômico. Impactos naturais: redução de recursos hídricos; aumento da poluição hídrica; arenização das áreas afetadas; destruição da fauna e flora. Impactos social e econômico : migração descontrolada para áreas urbanas; degradação familiar ; crescimento da pobreza; perda de potencial agrícola.

Impactos no Estado da Paraiba A Paraíba é o estado brasileiro que possui maior percentual de áreas com nível de degradação de terras muito grave, afetando o dia-a-dia de uma grande parte da população [...] (OLIVEIRA, et al., 2008 apud CANDIDO, 2002 ) A análise de dados coletados no Estado da Paraíba indica uma alta deterioração das condições de vida, e denuncia as dificuldades das famílias em se manter, o que implica um sério comprometimento das condições de sustentabilidade das terras (OLIVEIRA et al., 2008 apud CANDIDO et al., 2002 ). Nesse cenário, a população não vê alternativa a não ser a exploração dos recursos naturais para continuarem a viver em meio a tantas necessidades. Após exaustão das terras, seja por esgotamento do solo em decorrência do uso intensivo, instalação de processos erosivos resultante da devastação da cobertura vegetal e ou salinização, e sem medidas de contenção da degradação das terras, surge a desertificação no seu estágio mais severo [...] (OLIVEIRA et al., 2008)

Convivência com o semiárido C onviver no semiárido é construir politicas públicas para sepultar a velha estratégia de combate a seca. Marca fundamental da convivência é a pluralidade: Nela não cabe a monocultura, a concentração de terras e a concentração de água.

P ráticas de convivência com o semiárido - Realizar uma reforma agrária ampla e adequada a realidade do semiárido - Adotar plantios que sejam resistentes e vivam com pouca água (a palma, o mandacaru, o umbu e cajá) - Criar animais que sejam adequados a esse clima (bodes, carneiros, galinha caipira.) - Desenvolver e utilizar tecnologias que possibilitem ao povo a capitação de água das chuvas.
