Important to know
•Common verbs which take the gerund include: enjoy, hate, finish, love, practice,
suggest, etc.
•Common verbs which take the infinitive “with to” include: can’t afford, agree,
decide, expect, hope, help, need, offer, plan, pretend, promise, etc.
•Verbs: continue, prefer, start, begin, can take either gerund or infinitive and it
doesn’t change its meaning.
•“I prefer to study today” or “I prefer studying today” ( no difference in meanings and
they are both correct)
•Try, remember – can take gerund or infinitive but their meanings will change:
•
•“Try to be on time” – make an effort to be on time
•“Try doing yoga” – do it and see if you like it (experimenting)
•
•“I remember to phone him” – Don’t forget it
•“I remember phoning him” – I have a memory of it
