INTRODUCTION
PAINTS Paints are coating of fluid material which are applied as a final finish to wall surface, such as walls, ceilings, wood work, metal work, etc. On drying of paint it forms a thin protective layer. Paints can be oil based or water based. Paints can be applied by brushing and spraying. The main composition of paints are pigment, binder, solvent and additive. There are some types of paints based on purposes and properties namely, Oil Paints, Distempers, Metallic Paints, Enamel Paints, Bituminous Paints, etc.
VARNISHES Varnish is an almost homogeneous solution of resin in oil, alcohol or turpentine. It dries after applying, leaving a hard, transparent and glossy film of resin over the varnished surface. It is used primarily for wooden material to give its grains a clear, shiny surface and detailed look, but can also be used on other surfaces. Varnish is a clear, pale solution of resinous substance like amber, common resin, copal, lac, shellac, etc. dissolved in either oil, turpentine or alcohol. The main compositions of varnish are Resins, Solvent and Drier. Types of varnishes based on solvent used are oil varnish, turpentine varnish, spirit varnish, water varnish, acrylic varnish, spar varnish.
REQUIREMENTS OF PAINTS AND VARNISHES
REQUIREMENTS OF AN IDEAL PAINT It should be possible to apply easily and freely. It should dry in a reasonable time. It should form hard and durable surface. It should not be easily affected by atmosphere (chemically inert). It should possess attractive and pleasing appearance. It should not be harmful to the health of workers. It should have a good binding power so as to cover the surface its applied on completely and thoroughly. It should be economical in cost.
REQUIREMENTS OF GOOD VARNISH It should be fire resistant and of less odor. It should render the surface glossy. It should dry rapidly and give a finished surface which is uniform and aesthetically appeasing. The color of varnish should not fade away when the surface is exposed to atmospheric actions. The protecting film developed by varnish on drying should be tough, hard and durable. It should have good weathering properties, resist abrasion and wear well. It should not shrink or show cracks after drying.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES OF APPLYING PAINT Paint forms a thin layer on surface after application which protect the walls and other surface from weathering actions. It provides aesthetical appearance to the surface on which it is applied. It is easy to apply. Some paints have the ability to absorb the free carbon compounds from atmosphere hence results in decrease in pollution. DISADVANTAGES OF APPLYING PAINT High initial cost. Skill labour is required while painting the patterns and abstract shape to enhance aesthetics. Maintenance is high.
ADVANTAGES OF APPLYING VARNISH Varnish forms a thin transparent layer on surface after application which protect the wooden materials and other wooden surfaces from atmospheric actions as well as moisture. Also provides a smooth surface. It makes the wooden surface fire resistant to some extent. It improves the aesthetical appearance by forming a hard, clear and shiny coat. It is easy to apply. Protect the wood from termite attack. DISADVANTAGES OF APPLYING VARNISH Maintenance is high. Discoloration over time. Low resistance to abrasion. Hazardous to health when gets inhaled hence requires the use of a full mask.
