2 Days of AI - developing AI literacy for art educators Chris Rowell – GLAD Gathering Pace Conference 2024

UAL’s DLP team’s response to AI: Academic integrity statement Workshops – Text and image AI conversations AI Position Statement AI student guide 12 Days of AI 2

Why I thought there was a need for it… 1. Staff had a variety of views during the workshops… Safe space where individuals could work at their own pace…where we could look at AI critically ….together. 12 Days of AI 3

So what was the 12 Days of AI? 1. Online programme, in 20 minutes a day over 12 days, got participants using a variety of different AI tools. 2. Aimed at teaching & learning staff. 3. I started writing the course with three objectives in mind: How to set up and use 12 AI tools How these tools could be used in a teaching and learning context Discussions about the potential and limitations of using these AI tools The course was set up on a WordPress blog and began on Thursday 30th November and ended Friday 15th December 2023 …and open to all. 12 Days of AI 4

The 12 Days: Day 1: Using prompts Day 2: Summarising texts Day 3: Creating images Day 4: Creating videos Day 5: Translating videos Day 6: Creating presentations Day 7: Conducting research Day 8: Creating flashcards Day 9: Creating podcasts Day 10: Improving your presentations Day 11: Creating discussion topics Day 12: Gamification 12 Days of AI 5

20 minute task: Each day during the 12-day program, we released a new blog post detailing a 20 minute task, such as writing a prompt, summarising text or creating a video: 12 Days of AI 6

Comments: Once the task was complete we created a series of questions about the activity. The questions were aimed to get some reflection and to critically look at some of the issues related to their use in a classroom setting. 12 Days of AI 7

A brief evaluation: the numbers By the end of the course we had over 1200 participants who had signed up 16,688 visits 458 comments posted over the 12 days 12 Days of AI 9

A brief evaluation: survey The structure of the course, “I love the format! Daily bite size tasks to easily allow staff to explore different tools with simple but thoughtful tasks”, “I like that it self-led can choose which time suits you best the variety of the tools” The breath of the AI tools: “Like variety and when have more time will look at alternatives”, “Really like the diversity of tools being offered and the suggested prompts” The interaction in the blog discussion, “the comments after each task is great” and “its a good learning experience seeing others thoughts and experiences” 12 Days of AI 10

What worked and what didn’t? What worked: Flexibility (Time) Safe space to make mistakes Opportunity to work together Open to all! What didn’t: Limitations of the Wordpress blog Exploring issues in depth Engagement? 12 Days of AI 11
