Global warming means the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s surface over time. It happens mainly because of the rise in greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in the atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun, creating a “greenhouse effect,” which makes the planet warmer.

AGENDA INTRODUCTION CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON MOTHER EARTH PREVENTION OF GLOBAL WARMING FEW INTERESTING FACTS
What is Global Warming? Global warming is the Earth's gradual rise in average temperature, mainly caused by humans burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, which releases gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to climate change, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather events.
CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING Fossil Fuels : the massive use of fossil fuels is obviously the first source of global warming, as burning coal, oil and gas produces carbon dioxide - the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere - as well as nitrous oxide.
Deforestation : The exploitation of forests has a major role in climate change. Trees help regulate the climate by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. When they are cut down, this positive effect is lost and the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere. 5
Mining : modern life is highly dependent on the mining and metallurgical industry. Metals and minerals are the raw materials used in the construction, transportation and manufacturing of goods. From extraction to delivery, this market accounts for 5% of all greenhouse gas emissions .
Waste disposal : Waste management methods like landfills and incineration emit greenhouse and toxic gases - including methane - that are released into the atmosphere, soil and waterways, contributing to the increase of the greenhouse effect . 7
Intensive farming : Another cause of global warming is intensive farming, not only with the ever-increasing livestock, but also with plant protection products and fertilizers. In fact, cattle and sheep produce large amounts of methane when digesting their food, while fertilizers produce nitrous oxide emissions. 8
EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON MOTHER EARTH Rising Temperatures & Ice Melt: A gradual increase in average global temperature causes glaciers to retreat, Arctic sea ice to decline, and permafrost to thaw, potentially releasing stored greenhouse gases. Sea Level Rise: Melting land ice and the expansion of warmer ocean water lead to rising sea levels, threatening coastal communities and ecosystems. Extreme Weather: The planet experiences more frequent and intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, floods, droughts, and violent tropical cyclones.
10 Habitat Loss: Plants and animals struggle to adapt to rapid environmental changes, leading to the loss of habitats and increased risk of extinction for many species Ecosystem Disruption: Warmer waters cause coral bleaching and can weaken or destroy coral reefs , impacting the thousands of species that depend on them. Forest Degradation: Increased droughts and wildfires contribute to the dying off of trees and the reshaping of forest ecosystems. Food and Water Insecurity: Changes in climate patterns and increased droughts can lead to agricultural losses and water scarcity, threatening food and water security in many regions. Risks to Human Health: More intense heatwaves, changes in water availability, and the spread of diseases all pose increased risks to human health. Disruption to Communities: Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and resource scarcity can displace communities and exacerbate other challenges like conflict and pandemics.
PREVENTION OF GLOBAL WARMING Turn off unused lights and appliances. Use bikes, walk, or take buses instead of private cars. Plant trees and discourage deforestation. Switch to renewable energy at home and school. Recycle and reuse to reduce waste. Say no to plastic bags—use cloth or paper ones. Support eco-friendly products and practices. Organise or participate in clean-up drives in local areas. Educate friends and family about climate protection. Conserve water and avoid wastage. 11
FEW INTERESTING FACTS 12 Rapid Temperature Rise: Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 1.1 degrees Celsius (1.8°F) since the late 19th century, with the rate of warming significantly faster since the 1980s. Warmest Decade: The period from 2015-2024 was the warmest decade on record. Record CO2 Levels: Current atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are the highest in at least 800,000 years, surpassing pre-industrial levels by over 50%. Human-Caused: Human activities, including burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are the primary drivers of the increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
