The Burlington Housing Authority's
Family Self Sufficiency Program
presents
A method for Life-long goal setting
Going for the Goal
How and Why to Use This Workbook
By completing the activities in the workbook you will become more familiar with the process of
setting goals in the FSS style. You will also be better prepared to set effective, realistic and
achievable goals that will take you far.
As a prospective participant of the FSS program, it is obvious that you want to move forward,
improve your life and become more successful. Just like embarking on a journey, you need a road
map to get where you are going. You want to get there by following a set path and you want to know
you are headed in the right direction. Goals will be your road map on your journey to success! Goals
will help you stay headed in the right direction and keep you from getting lost.
The most important part of this work book is the “Draft Contract” on the final page. Make sure you
complete this before meeting with your Case Manager. The draft will serve as a jump off point
to create your official FSS contract. It is the basis of your actual FSS contract that you will complete
with your Case Manager.
Goals give you direction in life!
What will you do
With your one, wild and
Precious life?
---Mary Oliver
Finding, setting, exploring, and achieving your goals is
the point of participating in the FSS program.
If you don't have goals, or aren't motivated to find any,
this program will not be of use to you.
However, should you choose to do the work, the
rewards could change your life forever, entirely for the
better.
Going for the Goal
The following pages each contain a somewhat
inspirational or insightful quotation on our subject.
As you read through them take note of which one
speaks to you the most, and why.
Write it down on Page 2 of your workbook to share
with your FSS Case worker!

there is only DO,

EVERYONE HAS A SUCCESS MECHANISM,
AND A FAILURE MECHANISM.
THE FAILURE MECHANISM
GOES OFF BY ITSELF.
THE SUCCESS MECHANISM
ONLY GOES OFF WITH A GOAL .
EVERY TIME WE WRITE DOWN AND TALK ABOUT A GOAL,
WE PUSH THE BUTTON & START THE SUCCESS MECHANISM .

is no more than a
dream.

What about Wishing on a Star?
(Write down your answers on page 3 of your workbook.)
1.Describe a dream or vision you have for your
life.
2.What is one of your goals?
What do you see as the difference between
a dream and a goal?
"A goal is something
you work to achieve,
the end to the means,
so to speak."
The process of setting goals and targets allows you
to choose where you want to go in your life. Now
we'll look at other reasons to set goals...
Is There a Difference Between a
Dream and a Goal?
It’s All in the "Doing"
Think of a goal you've had in the
past that you reached.
What happened as a result?
How did you feel?
(Write down your answers on page 4 of your workbook.)
Why Set Goals?
oto find direction in all areas of life
oto gain control over your life
oto create long-term vision
oto achieve more
oto improve performance
oto increase motivation to succeed
oto increase your self confidence
oto eliminate attitudes that hold you back
oto identify results
oto challenge yourself to grow
People Who Set Goals...
•SUFFER LESS stress & anxiety
•Concentrate better
•Show more self confidence
•Perform better
•Are happier and more satisfied
Did You Know…
•Only 3 % of the population engages in some kind of goal
setting.
•Only 1 % of those write their goals down.
•The 1% who write down their goals are the highest
achieving, highest paid people in the world!
Brainstorm Some Goals
Take a few minutes to come up with and WRITE
DOWN three goals you'd like to set for yourself in
life.
(For FSS purposes, include an employment and financial goal...
example: own a house, become a medical receptionist, clear up my
credit, etc.)
(Write down your answers on page 5 of your workbook.)
Setting SMART goals
What are SMART goals?
S - SPECIFIC
M - MEASUREABLE
A - ACTION-ORIENTED
R - REALISTIC
T - TIMELY
Setting SMART GOALS...
Specific - Our minds need specific targets to
work effectively. State exactly what you wish to accomplish.
Measureable - A goal needs to be measureable so we can tell exactly
when that goal has been reached - there must be a benchmark!
Action-Oriented - Goals are not met without doing some work. There
are action steps you'll take in the process of achieving your goals.
Realistic - Meaning, that it is practical and can be achieved... setting
the goal of being the next American Idol isn't realistic if you can't
carry a tune!
Timely - A goal must have a target date! Having a deadline will help
to motivate you.
SMART GOALS,
the technique we
use in FSS to set
& attain realistic
goals!
SMART GOALS..... continued
Re-write your list of goals from page 5 of the workbook on to
pages 7,8 & 9 using the SMART Goal formula. See examples
below.
Example Goal: I want to buy a house.
SMART Goal: I want to buy a house by January 1, 2015.
See the difference?
Example Goal: I want to go back to school.
SMART Goal: I want to enroll in CCV for an Associates Degree in Business by
January 1, 2011.
Starting to get it now? One more…
Example Goal: I want to clean up my credit.
SMART Goal: I want to be debt free with a credit score of 680 by April 15, 2013.
Still have questions? See your FSS Case Manager.
People can’t set goals for anyone but themselves.
Your goals must be for YOU, and you must know WHY you are
setting these goals.
You need to be aware of what you're getting out of your hard
work in reaching these goals.
These PERSONAL BENEFITS will be your STRONGEST
MOTIVATORS to keep going. They'll give you the drive and
determination to push past obstacles and have success!
Personal Benefits.....
What’s in it For You??
Look at your goals from pages 7, 8 &9. How will you benefit
when you reach them? Write down these personal benefits.
See below for examples.
So, what's in it for you?
(Write down your answers on page 10 of your workbook.)
Example 1
SMART Goal: I will enroll at CCV for an AA Degree in business by April 1, 2012
Personal Benefit: I will get a better job so I will have more money to support my family. I will not
have to worry about bills. I may be able to take vacations!
Example 2
SMART Goal: I will own a reliable car by June 1, 2011.
Personal Benefits: I can get to work on time. I can go where I want when I want. I won’t have to
borrow a car, bug people for rides, take a cab or ride the bus!
Prioritizing means putting your goals in order of importance.
Many people get overwhelmed and confused because they don't
know where to start! Two ways of prioritizing your goals are:
By Category
By Timeline (This is what we use in the FSS program.)
Prioritizing
Category: This method separates your goals into themes
like work, school, family, recreation etc. Some goals will
actually fall into more than one category.
Timeline: In FSS we set goals by timeline…long-term and
short-term. Often we need to work on our short-term goals
first because completing them is part of reaching the long-
term goal.
Long Term goal (your Final Goal): At program completion, 5 years from when
you enroll in FSS.
Short-term Goals (Your Interim Goals) : Anything sooner than 5 years to
accomplish (ie. Graduating CCV within 2 years)
Activities (Your Action Steps): Any steps you need to take right away in order to
meet the short or long term goals (i.e. To graduate CCV, you first need to see a CCV
counselor, then register for classes.)
Prioritizing..Remember in FSS, we work by TIMELINE
Now review the three goals you have been working
with and prioritize them by timeline using page 11
of your workbook.
Do you feel you have your priorities
straight?
After prioritizing your goals you put them into logical
order otherwise known as SQUENCING .
In your workbook mark which in the list below should come
1st, 2nd, and 3rd...
Goals:
o__ Buy a house
o__ Develop a budget that works
o__ Make a payment plan with creditors to pay off debts
Sequencing….. When Do I Do What???
(Use page 12 of your workbook)
•Being prepared is CRUCIAL to goal
setting! Many people don't anticipate
things getting in their way, and they get
completely stopped in their tracks.
•The most successful people keep going no
matter what, or they figure out ahead of
time what can go wrong, and then take
the steps to stop obstacles before they
even happen!
OBSTACLES!! Plan for ‘em
•Review the three goals you have been working with
then write down some obstacles that might get in your
way.
•Think about how you can avoid some pitfalls that
stopped you in the past, or that might happen in the
future. Write down some solutions to the potential
obstacles.
•Take your time with this one! Life happens to
everybody - how you deal with it is what counts!
Obstacles
(Use page 13 of your workbook)
•Remind yourself of your personal benefits... keep your eyes
on the prize!
•Increase the frequency of personal rewards
•Tell others about your goal
•Enlist the help of others
•Keep re-evaluating your goal
Using page 14 of your workbook, write a little bit
about what motivates YOU.
Staying Motivated
Below are some examples of goal busting behaviors.
Don’t let them derail you!
•Setting unrealistic goals
•Setting TOO MANY goals
•Lack of supporting resources
•Lack of focus
•Fear of failure
•Fear of success
•Lack of support (trying to do it all alone!)
•Lack of self-confidence
What are your own goal busters?
Write them down on page 15 of your workbook
Goal Busters
REMEMBER:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest
fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our
light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and
fabulous?
Actually, who are you NOT to be? Your playing small
doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightening about
shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around
you... and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give
other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated
from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates
others.
- Nelson Mandela
When I dare to be powerful,
to use my strength in the
Service of my vision,
it becomes less and less
important whether I am afraid.
CONGRATULATIONS!
The next step will be to complete the FSS DRAFT
CONTRACT in your workbook,
and schedule a meeting with
Rhonda Freed or Emily Cameron
and enroll yourself into FSS!
Be sure to bring your workbook
with all of your answers written out!
