gonda / lasoda INTRODUCTION:- B.N:- Cordia myxa Family:- Boraginaceae Chromosome no. :- 2n=48 Origin:- India(Himalayan tract).

Botanical description TAXONOMY:- Domain:- Eukaryota Kingdom:- Plantae Phylum:- Tracheophyte Class:- Magnoliopsida Family:- Boraginaceae Genus:- Cordia Species:- myxa Floral Biology:- Perfect flower with radial symmetry, fused calyx and corolla. Sepals, petals and androecium normally 5-6, rarely 7. Inflorescence:- Helicoid cyme Pollination:- Cross pollinated, Gonda has white scented flowers which are quite showy, attract large variety of insect pollinators.

The initiation of flower take place from 10 th march to 23 rd April under jodhpur condition. Anthesis:- 7:15pm to 8:45pm (peak time is 7:45-8:00pm). Dehiscence:- Nocturnal Fruiting:- Fruiting:- Fruit set take place after 2 weeks of flowering and fruit matures in 50-60 days after fruit set. Fruit type:- Drupe. Marketable maturity of fruit:- 30-35 days after fruit set. The completely ripened fruits are used for seed extraction for nursery raising. Morphology:- Bark:- Greyish-brown, smooth in young trees Leaves:- Simple, alternate, ovate to broadly ovate 7-15 cm long, 5-10cm wide and leaf margin entirely or slightly Undulate with a waxy texture.

Adaptive features TOLERANCE TO HARSH ENVIRONMENT CONDITION:- Drought resistance : The tree is known for its ability to withstand water stress, making it suitable for dry areas. Adaptation to poor soils : It can grow well even in marginal or wastelands where other fruit trees may struggle. Temperature tolerance : Gonda trees are found in wide range of temperatures across tropical and subtropical regions i.e , upto 48.8˚C.

Sticky fruit Pulp : The ripe fruit has a viscous, sticky pulp that adheres to animals. This facilitates zoochory, where animals consume the fruit and subsequently disperse the seeds over a wider range. Mucilaginous leaf : It have glabrous (smooth) and pubescent leaf (hairy). It stores a little amount of water, which helps the plants top survive in hot and arid regions. Color change during ripening : The fruits change color as it ripens (from green to yellow/ white and translucent) likely serves as a visual cue to attract frugivorous birds and mammals, enhancing the chances of seed dispersal. Special adaptive features

Decidious nature : The tree sheds its leaves during the peak of the hot summer, which helps to reduce water loss through transpiration. Versatile uses : The fact that the immature fruits are used as vegetables and for pickling, while the ripe fruits are edible, might contribute to its cultivation and propagation.
