BACKGROUND INFORMATION: ORGANISATION SETUP : Non Profit HISTORY: GOONJ, formed in 1999 by Anshu Gupta. Initiated over 1500 developmental activities under ‘ Cloth for work’. GOONJ started with 67 clothes and now deals with over 3000 tones of material. In 2007 it started the 'Not Just a Piece of Cloth' (NJPC) campaign, after the 2004 tsunami. In 2009, it joined the Joy of Giving Week, later renamed Daan Utsav . In 2011 supported thousands of children under its initiative ‘School to School’ with basic school material. In 2017 it started ‘RAAHAT’ to work on relief & rehabilitation in a series of disasters.

MISSION : Repositioning cloth and other underutilized material, beyond charity. Adding dignity and turning clothing into a big resource for development . Spreading the idea beyond geographical boundaries so that people all around the world thinks of clothing as a basic need and a subject to work on. VISION: To make clothing a matter of concern. T o bring clothing in the list of subjects for the development sector. Building a parallel economy which is not CASH based but TRASH based.

AIM OR OBJECTIVE OF ORGANISATION: Spreading awareness about the concept of recycling. Providing a channel to deposit reusable material to reach the most needy. CORE VALUES: We don’t fix up targets, we value potential. Positive word of mouth is our biggest strength . We strongly believe in the wisdom of people we are working for . We don’t promote charity, we turn old charitable material into development resource . We don’t try to do everything on our own, instead we use the strength of collaboration with various stake holders . We don’t spend money on our own infrastructure, furniture etc we use old material from table, chairs and computers to office stationary. Use material as a tool to bring ignored issues to light like basic needs. To bring communities together , to make them aware of their own power, to increase people’s participation , to change mindsets .

MAIN FOCUS AREA: Menstrual Hygiene and Management Disaster relief and Rehabilitation Humanitarian aid Community development Rural development work - Sanitation - Water - Agriculture Livelihood and Income Generation Education

ACTIVITIES UNDER TAKEN: Donated urban school material which acted as motivation to get rural children to school. Turned massive disaster wastage into resource for development of Gujrat earthquake to tsunami, Bihar floods, Andra Pradesh floods, UK floods, J & K floods and Chennai floods. Donated clothes were disinfected, washed, and recycled into over 3.0 million sanitary pads which were then placed in cotton bags to make sanitary napkins called "My Pads" . Shiped over 70,000 kgs of material a month and had also converted 1,000 tones of used clothes , household goods and other urban discards into usable resources for the poor. Annually initiates over 1500 development activities under its flagship initiative Cloth for work'(CFW) : from repairing roads , recharging water ponds , building bamboo bridges to digging wells .

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: FUNDING AND FINANCIAL SYSTEM: In 2015, General Donation includes Deutsche Bank Award Money. ‘Store Rent E xpress’ under Direct Programme Activities. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, store rent constituted 8%,13% and 7% of total expenses respectively. Publicity and Transportation expenses taken as Fund Raising Expenses. Other expenses includes non recurring expenses. Investments includes interest accrued on fixed deposits.

July ’ 12: GOONJ recognized as ‘Game Changing Innovation’ by NASA & US State Dept. June ’ 12 : GDN-Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project . Nov ’ 12: Anshu Gupta, Founder Goonj gets ‘ Social Entrepreneur of the year award’ by Schwab Foundation.
