Arts and Crafts of Indonesia Indonesia is an archipelago consisting of more than 17, 000 island. It has various indigenous groups with unique customs and traditions and has a rich biodiversity Most Indonesians are Muslims . Islam is one of the biggest influences that shape Indonesian art . Religions like Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism are also presented in the country and respected by the Muslim majority

Painting Early Indonesian paintings were mainly used for religious and ritual purposes. These painting were mainly used for religious and ritual purposes. These painting were used to adorn the walls and ceiling of their temples to honor and worship their gods. Maros Regency, South Sulawesi – the earliest examples of Indonesian paintings are the prehistoric cave painting founded around 10,000 BCE. (these painting showed animal drawings and handprints made using a red pigment)

Sculpture Sculpture have long existed in Indonesia. As early as stone age to the Iron Age, megalithic sculpture were uncovered in Indonesia Sculpture were made from hardwood and stone. Some of these were carved on the walls called reliefs, while some are freestanding sculptures that guide their temples. Example is the Prajnaparamita , which means “Perfection Transcendent Wisdom”

Garuda Hindu Sculptures depicts their gods, ancestors, and animals. Dragons – naga Garuda – birdlike statue

Naga Depicted as a gigantic snake and is natural enemy of the garuda . In Buddhist art, it is depicted as a great cobra with many heads. It represents nature, and is associated with water. It symbolizes fertility, droughts, and floods.
