THE CONCEPT OF GREEN
BUILDING

GREEN BUILDING

Green Building

Protectingandrestoringhuman

What makes a building
"green"?
Agreenbuildingisa
structure that is
environmentallyresponsible
and resource-efficient
throughoutitslife-cycle.
Theseobjectivesexpand
and complement the
classicalbuildingdesign
concernsofeconomy,
utility,durability,and
comfort.

Green buildings are designed to reduce the
overall impact of the built environment on
human health and the natural environment
by:
Efficiently using energy, water, and other
resources
Protecting occupant health and improving
employee productivity
Reducing waste, pollution and
environment degradation

For example……….
Greenbuildingsmayincorporate
sustainablematerialsintheir
construction(e.g.,reused,
recycled-content,ormadefrom
renewableresources);
Create healthy indoor
environmentswithminimal
pollutants(e.g.,reducedproduct
emissions);
Andfeaturelandscapingthat
reduceswaterusage(e.g.,by
usingnativeplantsthatsurvive
withoutextrawatering).

Building Types
Homes
Schools
Commercial
Buildings
Laboratories
Healthcare Facilities

Guidelines to construct a
Green Building
By using recycled Fly Ash in the concrete
; ( Fly Ash is a waste product obtained
from power plants ) which reduces the
amount of Portland cement Needed.
In the exterior finish , use Treated wood
that is free from chromium and arsenic.
Install drip irrigation system instead of
sprinkler system.

Cont..
Install CFL’s ( Compact Fluorescent
Lamps ) to reduce energy usage .
Use cellulose insulation in walls and
ceilings . ( Cellulose is free from
Formaldehyde and is fire resistant .)
Install double glazed windows which
keep the heat out in summer and keep
the heat in in winter .

Cont..
You may also install Photo Voltaic cells
which collect energy from the sun and
convert it to electrical energy .
DO NOT use VOC paints . ( VOC’s =
Volatile Organic Compounds ) . Non-
VOC paints are available from all major
paint manufacturers .

Benefits Of Green Building

strategies can
maximizeboththe
economic and
environmental
performance of
buildings.

Environmental benefits
Enhance and protect
biodiversity and
ecosystems
Improve air and water
quality
Reduce waste
streams
Conserve and restore
natural resources

Economic benefits
Reduce operating costs
Create, expand, and shape markets for
green product and services
Improve occupant productivity
Optimize life-cycle economic
performance

Social benefits
Enhance occupant comfort and health
Heighten aesthetic qualities
Minimize strain on local infrastructure
Improve overall quality of life

Where does INDIA stand in
promoting the GB concept
?
India , which has an estimated 19 years
for its domestic oil reserve to last and
imports 86 % of its fuel consumption ,
has taken a leading role in promoting GB
, coming close behind the US , Australia
and Canada .
In India there has been a great increase
in the erection of GB’s most of which are
IT parks , airports , Government buildings
and corporate structures .

What YOU can do !
Talk with your contractor and architect
about green building .
Do your own research thoroughly .
Identify what aspects of green building
are important to you .
