FACTORS AFFECTING THE LEVEL OF READING COMPREHENSION AMONG GRADE 4 PUPILS AT DAWIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DURING MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING

RATIONALE Reading comprehension is the ability to conclude and understand the content and main ideas of a book correctly. - Azmuddin et al., (2020). Reading comprehension is the ability to conclude and understand the content and main ideas of a book correctly. - Azmuddin et al., (2020).

Understanding what you read thoroughly and precisely is critical for learning, performing well on examinations, and eventually succeeding in school and in a profession. RATIONALE

RATIONALE Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries were placed on lockdown, schools across the country were closed to prevent the virus from spreading, and we were advised to stay at home.

RATIONALE According to research, data shows that by the time children graduate from elementary and are promoted to high school, one-third are identified as "frustrated readers" and another one-third are "instructional readers."

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM 1. What is the level of reading comprehension of Grade 4 pupils at Dawis Elementary School based on the Phil-IRI (pre-test only)?

2. What is the level of the factors that affect their reading comprehension during modular learning in terms of: 1.1 . Environment (Home Factor); 1.2. Parent Factor; 1.3. Teacher Factor; and 1.4. Learner Factor? STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

3. Is there any significant relationship between the reading comprehension levels of Grade 4 learners and the following factors: 3.1 Home; 3.2 Parent; 3.3 Learner; and 3.4 Teacher? STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

METHODOLOGY Page 4 Research Methodology is a systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study.

Research Design This study used a descriptive design and use survey questionnaires as well as correlational design.

Research Respondents This study is undertaken among the grade 4 pupils of Dawis Elementary School who are presently enrolled in the school year 2021-2022 who undergone Phil- Iri .

Research Environment

A survey questionnaire from Amado Montera Cadiong (2019) Factors Affecting the Reading Comprehension Level of Grade VI Learners of Selected Elementary School in the District of Tanza , Cavite https://journals.researchparks.org/index.php/IJIE/article/view/141 Research Instrument

A record of Phil-IRI (pre-test only) from the grade four adviser of Dawis Elementary School. Research Instrument

FINDINGS Summary of the Findings Majority of pupils were belonging to instructional reader. Home-related factor is weakly associated to the level of reading comprehension. Parent factor, learner factor and teacher factor is significantly associated to learners reading comprehension.

CONCLUSIONS CONCLUSION

Based on the data gathered from the respondents, we, the researchers were able to conclude that most of the grade 4 pupils at Dawis Elementary School were belonging to instructional readers.

Furthermore, parent and learner factors have a high correlation with students‘ reading comprehension.

Although the teacher factor was significant, the strength of the relationship was low.

Meanwhile, the strength of the environmental factor's relationship is negligible.

Page 2 To the Parent: The researchers recommend that to improve their child's learning environment, parents need to provide learners with adequate space away from disturbance and noise, as well as invest in equipment to optimize their learning environment such as chairs, study tables, lightning, etc. RECOMMENDATION

Page 2 Moreover, parents should refrain from exposing their children to family problems and frequent quarrels which affect their studies. They need to spare time to read with their children at home. RECOMMENDATION

Page 2 To the Learners: Researchers advise students to motivate themselves to learn to read by spending time reading each day. One thing that could aid them in learning to read is themselves. RECOMMENDATION

Page 2 To the Teacher: Amidst the pandemic, the teacher must go the extra mile in teaching reading even though there is an absence of face-to-face. Teachers should provide strategies to reach their pupils by checking up on their progress, especially in reading. RECOMMENDATION

Page 2 Moreover, we suggest that if possible teachers could do a home visiting to those pupils who found out to be in need of great assistance and help in terms of reading, following the IATF protocols. RECOMMENDATION
