“ A Prepaid Energy Meter” system consists of Energy and the GSM network. GSM modem utilizes the GSM network to deliver equivalent unit for the recharged amount to the Arduino and alerts consumer about the low balance. In the energy provider side, this system is used to update the consumer account and the database.

ADVANTAGES If we use this system it will be beneficial for the consumer to manage power. It is easy to operate and cost effective. The human errors in taking meter readings and processing bills can be reduced to large extent. Reduces the efforts of manual data collection of energy meter. Data which is received at service provider side is easy to manipulate for bill generation and other tasks.

DISADVANTAGES If the consumer is not sufficiently disciplined, they may use more electricity than they can afford to pay for, and end up in debt. Pre-payment meters are generally only used for consumers with a bad credit history and/or a history of non-payment of bills. It is not used in large supply places. Cost is expensive.

REASON TO CHOOSE THIS PROJECT The reason to choose this project is now-a-days some of the Bill Collectors are adding extra units to consumers and collecting extra money from us. Some of the poor families are suffering so much for their daily life expenditure, then how can they pay the extra bill of current? That’s why I invented this project.

How to use this project? There is a simple way to use this project that is you need a mobile phone and send a message to sim which is inserted in sim900a GSM module. The message to activate the prepaid electricity meter is ‘ATrech1’ to get 10 units of current or else if you need 20 units of current replace 1 with 3 to get 30 units of current.

CONCLUSION The design of Smart Energy Meter using GSM technology can make the users to pay for the electricity before its consumption. In this way, consumers hold number of units and then use the electricity until the unit exhausted. If the available units are exhausted then the notification message send to the consumer’s registered number and electricity supply is cut-off by a relay. This reduces the human labour and at the same time increases the efficiency in calculation of bills for used electricity. Prepaid Energy Meter will bring a solution of creating awareness on unnecessary wastage of power and will tend to reduce wastage of power. This paper will reduce the burden of energy providing by establishing the connection easily and no theft of power will take place.
