What Guidance is not? Guidance is not compulsion Guidance is not to give prescription Guidance is not to give advise Guidance is not to dominate a person Guidance is not making decision for others Guidance is not a direction or directive, client should be actively involved in decision making.

Need of Guidance from social point of view Changing conditions of home. Joint family to nuclear family to single parent family Changing condition of labour and industry initially traditional vocation was carried out but now micro specialization. Change in population like over population, direction of population from rural to urban, lack of space for recreation of children flat system of residence Change of social values – since we are moving to materialistic world, values do not exist as older times. Corruption, bribing etc are accepted in society eg: admitting a child in school by giving donations

What is Guidance Guidance is a process of helping an individual to help himself to discover self and realize its potentialities. It is a process because it has an input and we aim for some output. It is a continuous process with two persons involved, of which is an expert in the area and the other is the client needing guidance. The expert is there to satisfy the need of the client regarding the problem. Between these two interpersonal relationship exists. Client with problem Client with a solution to problem

Definitions of Guidance According to good, guidance is a process of dynamic interpersonal relationship, designed to influence the attitude and subsequent behaviour of the person. According to Crow and Crow, guidance is not making decisions for an individual which he has to make for himself, which is instead an assistance offered by an competent person to an individual of any age to help him direct his life, develop his point of view, make his own decision and carrying his own burden. According to Jones, guidance involves personal health. IT is designed to assist a person to decide where he wants to go, what he want to do or how he can best accomplish his purpose. It assists him to solve problems that arise in his life.

Nature of guidance Guidance is a continuous process from childhood to old age Guidance is assistance Guidance means self guidance i.e. a generalized and specialized service Guidance is the service meant for all only the strategies would be different based on the variant nature of the problem

Goals to be achieved in guidance Basic aim is to help an individual to increase his/her understanding about himself/herself To help an individual recognize the importance of values To help individual set realistic goals for himself/herself To develop an understanding of effective performance in life To help the individuals identify environment and personal barriers To help the individuals to be aware of his/her relationships with others.

Principles of guidance Guidance is a lifelong process Guidance gives importance to self direction or self discovery (who we are?, why we are on earth? what we can do? What we need to accept?) Guidance is based on cooperation Guidance is for all Guidance is an organized activity Guidance worker should have specialized training Guidance give respect to individual differences Guidance service should be based on adequate data Guidance is flexible Guidance emphasizes on code of ethics Guidance worker should be aware of existing political and social environment Guidance must be concerned on all area of pupil’s individual growth.
