Writing Chapter 1 Prepared by Angieross Sharon R. Valenzuela
Parts of Chapter 1 - Introduction Background information To build the problem statement, use the Creswell deficiency model Creswell Deficiency Model: (an approach to writing an introduction to a research study that builds on gaps existing in the literature) State the research problem Review studies that have addressed the problem Indicate deficiencies in the studies Advance the significance of the study for particular audiences State the purpose of the statement
Parts of Chapter 1 Background information Includes purpose of the study Research objectives In this section, you will introduce your readers to the issue you are exploring. Be sure to make your first sentence a compelling “hook.” State the major thesis that guides your study.
Introduction in FOUR paragraphs Paragraph 1 - write a short background of your study Paragraph 2 - write the “Rationale” – sets of reasons why you study this topic Paragraph 3 - write the supporting documents from the internet (or other source materials) WITH citation Paragraph 4 - write the objective of your study based on the gaps from previous studies
Parts of Chapter 1 Problem Statement / Statement of the Problem In this section you will provide a concise statement of the problem in just a few paragraphs (or numbered research questions) After a brief introduction, list your questions in a numbered list. Note: These research questions, worded in exactly the same way, will be repeated at the beginning of Chapter 3
Parts of Chapter 1 Significance of the study Here, you will make a case for why the problem you have proposed to study is both interesting (contestable) and important (negative consequence will be avoided or positive consequences will ensue with the information that may be gained from your study). Write down your beneficiaries and arrange them by rank
Parts of Chapter 1 Scope and Delimitation This is where you define the broader parameters and boundaries of your research The scope details what your study will explore (target population, extent, or study duration) Delimitations are factors and variables not included in the study In short, this contains the “ WHO are your respondents?” and the “ WHERE are you going to gather data”
Parts of Chapter 1 Definition of Terms Ensures that your readers will understand the components of your study in the way that you will be presenting them (because often your readers may have their own understanding of terms, or not be familiar with them at all) Here you provide a list of terms that will be used throughout the thesis and definitions of each of them
Parts of Chapter 1 Definition of Terms What to include in the list? Terms that important to your study or are used frequently throughout the research (but that are not common knowledge) Include terms that have unique meaning within the scope of your study Example: Leadership – define it based on how you are using it within your study -- this is for the readers to know what measures or markers of success of achievement that you will focus on within your study
Writing Activity Meet your group and begin writing the CHAPTER 1 of your paper. NEXT WEEK will be used for you to complete your Chapter 1 Deadline for completed Chapter 1 is on February 12, 2024
