What is Counseling?
-according to American Counseling Association, it is a
professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals,
families and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, and
career goals.
Lifestyle –the typical way of life of an individual, group or
culture
Risky behavior ….unhealthy lifestyle
What is Habit? What is Behavior?
•Habit is an acquired behavior pattern regularly
followed until it has become almost involuntary.

•Behavior is the way in which one acts or conducts
oneself, especially towards others.

In a study it was noted that majority of patients expected advice and help from
health care system in key health issues and substance abuse.
Health providers and primary physicians have roles in motivating
health promotion and disease prevention.

Health care systems are natural settings for interventions to
improve health behaviors for many individuals because repeated
contacts of typical interventions to help patients change unhealthy
behaviors, like treatment for chronic diseases.
Changing health behaviors (of Americans) has greatest potential of any
current approach to decrease morbidity and mortality across diverse
population.

1. Precontemplation–no desire to change
if there are-half-hearted and

2.Contemplation –there is the desire

“thinking about it”
3. Preparation –concrete plans are made, “I will do it”
4.Action –Actual implementation of the plan of
behavior change is usually timed as within the next
month to six months, “I’m doing it”
5.Maintenance –the changed behavior is maintained
from 6 months to 5 years.
