HARBOUR DRILLS PRESENTED BY SSGT WILLIAMS 12/20/2020 1
INTRODUCTION As with any military asset, Patrols will need to pause between missions to allow the platoon to carry out administration, therefore it is important to have set drills to allow the successful setting up of a defendable position where these tasks can be carried out 12/20/2020 2
AIM The aim of this lesson is to give a clear definition of the harbour and talk through the sequence of events and various layouts . 12/20/2020 3
Definition HARBOUR – An area well out of contact in which the emphasis is on administrative convenience, although protection and concealment will be maintained. 12/20/2020 4
Selection of Harbour Mission – The harbour must be located so that the platoon can carry out its missions and tasks. Location – The area should be: Defendable Sited in dense vegetation to provide cover from ground and air. Away from human habitation. Have access to a water supply Reasonable routes In/Out Good comms . Access to an HLS if possible 12/20/2020 5
Selection of Harbour Continued The following should be avoided: Obvious locations Possible, known or old enemy positions Ridge lines or crests Roads, tracks, trails etc Wet areas, steep slopes and small valleys 12/20/2020 6
Types of Harbour Three basic types of harbour: Triangular Hasty Silent 12/20/2020 7
Triangular Harbour Setting up a harbour area can be divided into five phases: 1. Selection – from a map, air photos, Arial recce and secured before occupation. 2. Occupation 3. Clearance Patrols 4. Sentries 5. Work routine 12/20/2020 8
Occupation of the Harbour You should note the following points: Snap ambush prior to the occupation (dump bergans /day sacks when adopting fire positions) Recce party consists of Pl Comd , Sect Comd , R/Op and x3 GPMG/LMG gunners Entry point 6 O’clock position Emergency Rendezvous (ERV) must be known to all and easily identifiable by both day and night Plt Sgt to check perimeter to ensure cohesion between sections 12/20/2020 9
Clearance Patrols Clearance patrols should detect and report the following: 1. Led by the Sect Comd looking for signs of recent enemy activity 2. Possible enemy approach routes 3. Unexpected obstacles 4. Streams 5. Possible ERV locations 6. Patrols will go out first light and last light 12/20/2020 10
Sentries Sentries must be posted at all times! Sentries act as an early warning system Sentries by night doubled up and staggered to allow continuity Things on a sentry position: Range card Stag list Watch Actions on card Lumi pens Whistle Map 12/20/2020 11
Work Routine Once the harbour is secure are sentries are posted then work routine may start. Considerations include; Stand to positions Clearing fields of fire (arcs) Deployment of warning devices and command detonated devices Laying of comms cord Shelters up by night / down at day, think about weather and marking for night ID 12/20/2020 12
Confirmatory Orders Confirmatory orders should be issued to establish the operational and administrative routine. The following should be covered: 1. Future operations and taskings 2. Alarm and Stand to procedures ( these should be rehearsed) 3. Orders for opening fire 4. Location of ERV 5. Sentry stag list 6. Resupply. This may include water patrols 12/20/2020 13
Confirmatory Orders Continued 7. Sleeping and feeding arrangements, especially if on hard routine 8. Track discipline 9. Staggered weapon cleaning 10. Toilets at night with in and during day light with in sentries arcs 11. HLS and it needs to be covered by fire 12/20/2020 14
Hasty Harbour In man made forests plantations it is often difficult to occupy a triangular harbour due to the problems of movement and noise created amongst closely growing trees. Points to note: The sequence is almost identical to the triangular harbour but with a reduced recce The Sect Comd meets the section and the end of the tree row and leads them in GPMG/LMG cover up and down the tree rows Plt Comd decides if clearance patrols need to sent out 12/20/2020 15
Silent Harbour Silent harbour may be used for short halts in high risk areas The following points should be noted: The thickest cover available should be used The patrol should lie shoulder to shoulder in a circle or triangle facing outwards The patrol commander remains in the centre Number of sentries required is dependant on the threat 12/20/2020 16
Summary It is important that any harbour is set up and all drills are carried out correctly, as we are at our most vulnerable when in these locations, we cannot anticipate when the enemy will strike, but we can reduce their effect by sound planning and execution 12/20/2020 17
