Harmful Changes in
Materials Science 3
Welcome! Are you excited for a fun
learning session?
At the end of the lesson,
you should be able to: 1.Identify changes in materials,
2.explain that changes in materials can be
harmful to living and non-living things in the
environment, and
3.demonstrate proper handling and disposal of
waste materials
Changes in Materials Can Be Harmful Materials that we use every
day may not be the same
tomorrow and the days to
come. Materials change.
There are many different
ways a material can change.
Biodegradable
materials are materials that easy to decay. Example:When you eat rotten food, you
might get food poisoning.
Decomposition is the process by which living
things are broken down to
simple materials after they
die. This is called rotting.
Decomposition occurs with
the help of decomposers,
which feed on dead materials
Decomposed materials may harm you.
They smell bad and can spread diseases to people.
Combustion or burning is a chemical change
that produces carbon dioxide and water with
the help of heat. EXHIBIT 1 EXHIBIT 2 EXHIBIT 3
Corrosion is the process by which metals get
damaged, often when they are exposed
to air or water. This has negative effects like damage to buildings, accidents,
and health problems.
Improper
waste
management Especially for non-
biodegradable materials,
this can cause harmful
changes in the environment.
Nonbiodegradable
materials
are those that do not decay
easily through natural processes.
These include plastics, foil, and
rubber.
Contamination of land, water, and air due to improper
waste disposal greatly contributes to
pollution. is the process of releasing of harmful materials into the
environment, making them dirty and unsafe.
Waste
Management
System refers to the actions taken to
manage waste from its creation
to disposal.
1.Reduce
2. Reuse
3. Recycle
Ways to Handle and Dispose of Waste Sort wastes
properly. Throw away food
that is already
spoiled. Different materials and
household products should
have their designated
areas for storage. 2 1 3
Ways to Handle and Dispose of Waste Use gloves to protect
your hands from
irritations and burns when
using potentially harmful
proucts. Dispose of expired
products and empty
product containers
properly. 5 4
