Harnessing Geothermal Energy – Scope and Challenges

Table of Contents Conventional Power Generation Geothermal Power Generation Advantages of Geothermal Energy Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy Cost of Energy Impact on Energy Industry Recommendations Questions to the audience Summary References

What are the conventional means of energy generation? Coal Oil Natural gas Globally, they still account for more than 60% as the mean to generate energy.

Steam-based Powerplant What part of the steam-based power plant is harmful to our climate? Steam turbine Condensor Pump Boiler Yes, the Boiler is the part where liquid water is converted to saturated/superheated steam to get useful work from it. Typically coal, oil and natural gas are burnt to generate this steam. The exhaust/flue gasses generated from this are greenhouse gases, which are harmful to our environment.

Is there an alternate way (preferably renewal) to generate steam to run a steam-based power plant? Yes, It’s Geothermal . The temperature of the core of the earth is around 4000-5000 ℃. This heat energy can be used to generate steam and run the steam-based power plant.

Impact on Energy Industry

Overall Impact Is Geothermal good or bad? On a life-cycle basis, geothermal energy emits 38 grams of CO2 equivalent per kWh of electricity produced, the 6th lowest out of all fuel types.

Recommendations Adequate grants and policies from governments to promote and reduce capital investment costs. Sector-specific grants for research & development to improve system efficiency and reduce capital costs Work to improve international cooperation for technology transfer and industrial practices. More geological surveys for potential geothermal resources

Question 1 Geothermal energy is highly location-specific. How can countries without significant geothermal resources still benefit from this technology?

Question 2 How can geothermal energy be integrated with other renewable energy sources to create a more resilient and sustainable energy grid?

Summary Geothermal is a renewable energy source which provides reliable and sustainable energy. It is affordable and has relatively low emissions. Key benefits are stability and minimal land footprint, along with challenges like high capex and geographic limitations. Overall, it reduces fossil fuel dependency and GHG emissions, providing employment opportunities and energy security. To conclude, geothermal energy provides a practical solution for a cleaner and reliable energy future.
