Modern cities change according to its needs.Now it faces globalization,and the result of it,shopping malls , multiplexes has been introduced to us. with this changing environment the old fabric is slowly changing its significance.Through the market character of that area still remains intact but cinema halls and theaters has lost its glory. So, the focus of this project is to develop a positive approach which is safe guarding an existing urban environment without changing its functional aspect and characteristics . This project is aimed at identifying the main characters and functions of the old bazzar street along with other facilities and how they act as a whole. After that, the project will develop some design guidelines so that , the area can sustain again for many years without losing its own characteristics and old historic glory. Backgrpound :
Introduction : Bidhan sarani , which is also known as Hatibagan area from Shyambazar crossing to Hatibagan market itself . This place is not only famous for its bazzar street character and market but also as entertainment hub for north calcutta’s people .There are cinema halls, theatres , Shopping streets, restaurants and parks and also school and colleges . All these criteria make this place a interactive social entertainment, economy generating hub from pre independence time to till now. So working on this place represents working with a recreational , entertainment district , economic generating place of Kolkata .so this site is selected so as to work on public realm which performed mixed function on an old fabric.
Location : Hatibagan is a neighbourhood in north Kolkata . The area is under Shyampukur and burtalla police station .It is next to Shyambazar.
