There are three basic types of retainers : Hawley Retainers Vaccum ( Essix )Retainers Permanent Retainers

Hawley retainer : it is labially situated component of removable appliance which could be active or passive , made of 0.7 mm stainless steel wire.

Uses: Passive Hawley : used to retain incisors and canines in their position after active orthodontic treatment .

Components: A B C

Advantages: This retainer is fabricated in a lab. So, chair time is negligible . Due to its versatility, it is very easy to modify and adjust . (adjustability ) This retainer can serve needs for years.( durability )

Disadvantages: Needs patients compliance Visible ( un_esthetic ) Interproximal wire may cause spaces High incidence of breakage It may have a slight negative effect on the speech.

Essix ( Vaccum ) Retainers : - are removable retainers that are made entirely of transparent plastic. - These  retainers  are designed to maintain the new position of your  teeth , It is 0.2 or 0.3 mm thick .

Advantages : Esthetic No interference with speech High strength Minimal bulk Inexpensive Quick fabrication

Disadvantages : At first, It may induce salivation Breakage ( in patients that have bruxism) Non-adjustable They can affect speech They can get distorted by heat. This can cause cracks or tears.
